Sorry to hear the Model S/X will be discontinued.

Our first Tesla was a 2019 Model S LR, and we loved it. The styling was almost timeless.

I couldn't agree more. Beautiful car btw. I had the same color on my 2013 S P85+, also my first Tesla. I had the rear facing jump seats in the trunk.

When the 2012 Model S came out that's when I started following Tesla. The more I read about that car the more and more impressed I was...and then the addiction started.

The low volume X and S needed the 10+ year old platforms to be refreshed from the ground up to remain competitive. It simply didn't make sense from a financial point of view. Also, the market for luxury sedans is virtually dead in America. SUV's and trucks are what's selling.
The Model X is supposed to be an SUV. From Tesla's 2012 reveal announcement:
Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA) unveiled the highly anticipated Model X last Thursday evening at its Design Studio in Southern California ... Model X will be priced competitively with other premium SUVs.
The Model Y is supposed to be an SUV as well. Says so front and center on the Model Y Home Page:
Meet Model Y
Electric Midsize SUV

According to Cox, the Cybertruck sold slightly better than the S/X combined in the US during 2025, by 20,237 to 18,955.

But Cox only tracks US sales. Globally, the S/X are a lot more widely available than the CT. On a global basis, the S/X combined probably outsold the CT in 2025.

So if Tesla is discontinuing the S/X, it may not be a positive sign for the CT. On the other hand, Elon seems to think that the CT -- or something like it -- has a future as an autonomous delivery vehicle:

No, they already killed the S and X globally last year. They mostly only sold them in NA to begin with.

The S and X are currently still being marketed in Europe and China. Here's the French order page for the S, for example.

Now, it's true they probably aren't selling a lot of S/X in Europe and China, given the tariffs and pricing situation. But the point is that the S/X are selling better than the Cybertruck in those markets, because the CT isn't available in Europe or China at all. There is no French CT order page.

I don’t think I’ve ever been happier to see a vehicle get canceled! Just ordered my track package before they completely sell out of those and will be turning my Model S Plaid into a true 200 mph unicorn!!! ZOMG!!!!!! So happy!!!

I would say this is an unlikely situation. Tesla needs to sell 20m cars to reach one of the Elon tranches and 10m FSD subscriptions for another. IMO a takerate of 50% overall is unlikely, so really need more than 20m in total sales... or ~11m more at minimum and with a reasonable take rate (and significantly higher than now), more like ~20m in sales. They can't do that without more designs. They'll all be mass market sort or have a commercial base. No more niche vehicles after Roadster.
They need to sell 20m total, not per year. Cybercab will count. Elon said the Roadster will be the last new vehicle today

Wow……just…wow. I was not expecting this today. I am not naive. I knew they were moving to autonomous vehicles and robotics. But I did not see the shift happening this quickly. I must say, I have followed Tesla since the 2012 Model S (I test drove it early on as a possible early adopter), but I did not expect such a paradigm shift in a company built on “building cars.” I am optimistic as a share holder that they are making pragmatic and obligatory transition from car manufacturing to integrated AI tech for the masses. But the first time I drove a Model S, it was like sitting in a car from the future. For that to have an end date is bittersweet to say the least. Timeless styling for sure. Maybe….just maybe….a roadster sounds not so bad now? After all, to end where it all began is somewhat apropos, no?
