The FSD model is running at all times, but not all features are allowed to control the car. Only when you "engage" FSD does it assume complete control.

So that means your emergency braking event was actually carried out by FSD. It just happen to override your parallel input.
If this is true then that’s even worse!

This is such a non-event, why are you trying to make a mountain of this? You were in a residential area, not the freeway. Nothing about the car cautiously stopping was dangerous.

This is the bag that my truck so bravely saved me from!!!

That looks like a pretty legit stop to me. Braking wasn't violent. Looks like it may be able to save me from a pothole smash. Wish the M3 could have done that back in the good ole days, would have saved a couple of tires.

If you’re rear-ended due to making a panic stop, then the real danger was the tailgater behind you failing to maintain a safe distance.

All the more reason that the roads will be safer when there are fewer humans at the controls.

The only breaks my CT takes is when it’s asleep in my driveway. Otherwise, “Gordon” is always on duty.

Also, my brakes work great the few times I’ve used them.

AEB saved my life once. Back in 2017. Came around large curve, and would have gone right into the back of a flatbed tow truck into the windshield. 4 point harness lock up. Didn't know what was happening till I was at a full stop.

It is independent from FSD. Design to minimize impact at last second type of events.

Many confuse AEB with Ghost braking. That is until one has experienced AEB. Usually one gets an alert. So you could look at past alerts. Pretty sure it also captures video during an event. Not exactly sure on the last statement.

Seems a little over dramatic from the OP. Maybe just reading the owners manual on the car ya drive might be a good idea.

This type of behavior isn't unique to the CT, or even Tesla. Automatic Emergency Braking will be required on all cars by 2029, and most have already enabled it. Tesla's implementation may be more aggressive than others and it certainly can detect things that others don't, which can be both good and bad. I have experienced it in my Model 3 a few times, and I can understand the OP's frustration. It's unsettling when the car does something you don't want it to do when you think you are in full control and have the situation well in-hand. You can't "dial it down", but like all things Tesla (and unlike most other manufacturers), I'm sure it will improve with time. Even if I could turn it off, I wouldn't because it has the potential to save me, my passengers, and people around me from a fatal accident. If it causes the person behind me to hit me, that is still better than many possible alternatives.
In this case, that paper bag could easily have been a large rock or other obstacle that could have caused serious damage. The truck could and should do better, and I'm sure it will with time. Until then, I will drive confidently knowing that my family is in one of the safest vehicles on the road and that if I make a mistake or miss something, the truck just might save us.

Just go sell your CyberTruck. The fact you’re posting this is ridiculous. You made it sound like such a potential danger. I thought based on your original post you were on a freeway or something. Then you post a video on an empty reseidential street just going around a right turn maybe going what 15mph in the night? To me with the night time shadows, that bag looks like a small boulder in the road.

Let’s play the game it’s not a bag and actually is a small boulder. Would you have wanted your truck to hit it? This post would be a lot different if it was. You’d be saying the emergency braking feature saved thousands in potential damage to my truck from not hitting a boulder, so thankful.

Also as others have mentioned disable it in your settings and save your bitching.

Kind of goes with the thought. If it saves a life here and there. Prevents someone from dying or ending up in ICU it is a success. I still don't think it was an AEB event for the OP.

Your description of this even makes it seem overly dramatic compared to what I saw here, IMO.

From your trucks perspective, it probably decided that looked like a rock or other battery piercing object in the roadway. Maybe you haven't considered this, but FSD has so much video out there that it has seen quite a few "just a paper bag" footage to warrant a hard stop. Road hazards trick human drivers all the time. With FSD sensing no other vehicles around you, it decided to stop. You should be grateful that this software is sensitive enough to want to protect you from unknown objects.

By the way, you should update your firmware so we can view the added real time telemetry.
The video tells an important story. Not everyone including FSD knows that object is a bag at night etc. The truck knew using 360° vision nobody is behind you and of course your speed was low. Sure it pissed off the passengers and embarrassed you. And yes there is room for improvement.
My truck doesn't stop like this unless FSD is active. Possibly the stop early setting is your answer. Mine is set to late not early. So this might give you back the control you want.

TBH, the image looks a lot like a small boulder. I'd rather have my CT over reacted than a costly repair if it was a small boulder, and If anyone followed me too close that would be his/hers own fault.

I was driving home from work last night *on FSD* and experienced this. It was going through an intersection at almost 40 mph, a car about 2 car lengths behind me. The light was flashing red for me, flashing yellow for the other side, right when the truck hit the intersection it suddenly slammed the brakes, going down to 30 mph in less than a second. very abrupt and without warning or sound or alert.

The truck does consider if there are cars behind, speed, surroundings.

On the freeway that I drive there is a large paint smear that my truck swerved to “avoid” whatever it interpreted. At the time it was mildly alarming.

Next day, same commute to work, no swerve as there were cars preventing such a maneuver, though the truck did its chirp with a mild velocity decrease.

So I would say at least the truck is being conservative at the moment, which is what you want should there be an incident in the future. There have been 2 occurrences for me where the truck basically stopped 25 to 5mph as the truck detected pedestrians I couldn’t see. It’s alarming but the truck is doing work.

Now I can’t tell you how to feel about what the tech is doing, but if you take a step back and think about it you might be able to appreciate it. I get what you are saying though that it’s annoying because these are false alarms, but one day it might not be.
