Well I got a little too confident with the whole fsd parking in my garage.

spent the day with my son on errands and watching the truck go and park for us. It took us home and instead of pulling into the driveway it turned around to back in… we watched in amazement as it slowly backed up … then boom… contact with my house.

and as it made contact it maintained backwards pressure as I hit the brake. So I pulled forward and to my disappointment the truck made contact rear left corner with the garage pillar and fascia.

so a few notes:

- yes I was overconfident in fsd.
- when the truck backed into the garagethe side mirrors folded back so I didn’t have the side mirror view but the pillar cameras were working. (as they do when I park head in first)
- damage to back quarter panel, wrap, rear bumper and facia.

I’ll fix the wrap easily but the bumper looks slightly chewed up.

Ouch. I guess I won't be trying that any time soon.

What version of FSD is it running?

The more I look at it… seems the truck came in at an angle.

I’m sorry that happened. Thank you for sharing as I have become very confident in FSD. We can all learn from your experience. In my experience, parking is the Achilles heel for the FSD CT edition. Its maneuvers are questionable at times and often ends up crooked or off to one side.

That is a bummer, especially with that cool wrap.
FSD 14.2 is GREAT on the highway, ok around town, mediocre at parking.
Still not ready to pick up and drop off my kids without me in the car, hopefully soon. Was hoping v14 would be the huge jump forward but more of a hop.

You could probably sand the bumper a little and then put some xpel armor on it. I bet you could make the bumper damage basically undetectable that way.

Too bad. Really sucks for you but I'm glad you shared your experience so I don't make a similar mistake. Thanks for the "heads up" about FSD parking errors. :)

14.2 has been great for me except today decided to start backing into a neighbor's driveway 3 houses away. Not sure why it decided to do that. Caught me off guard. It was doing so safely but still a bit unsettling. I was relying on it a lot, now I'll be even more vigilant. Sorry for your bad luck.

This is why I would not trust FSD even if I had it. Sure like Abilish said FSD is maybe 99% good but I would not want to wait for that 1% event to happen to me.

Yes this was not a big crash but another 1% issue could be bigger and more serious.

Curious question for you die hard FSD user. What type of event would need to happen to you that would make you really think about not using FSD? Would it be a accident if you were at fault and FSD was activated? Would something like running into a electric/telephone pole on a dark night be enough or for some reason it cut a turn short and you went into a bad/deep ditch situation.

I ask as I read you all getting some nicks and dings or what seems like minor issues. It seems 99.9% of the time you all just laugh it off it. But what if FSD caused something much more serious.

I’m one of those die hard users and I’ll be the first to admit FSD has its quirks and does some silly things sometimes. I’d also argue that if FSD was to be cut loose, I’m talking completely loose to where I could send my car to pick someone up at the airport by itself, there’s not the slightest doubt in my mind it could accomplish its mission and be safer than most human drivers. And that’s today, right this second.

Most of the time I'm on edge with FSD on and I monitor it closely, I have to say with V14 I did find myself getting just a slight bit compliant because it was way better than 13 for me. Thanks for the reminder and thankfully the damage was some scratches and plastic only.
