much needed ramp up. Was on my first trip and discovered that charging is not fun nor cheap. 250 kwh stations are rare. 30-60 mins charge time is no go. also prices are now 3x vs last charge 5 yrs ago lol. Hope v4 will reduce Time + Costs. otherwise, my 2 doors ICE would be better for winter long distance!
If you already own a 2 door ICE, then why are you driving a TRUCK on long trips? Trucks (of ANY type) use LOTS more 'fuel' and will take a lot longer to 'refuel' than a little 2 door car...

If you can't afford to drive a 'truck' on long trips, then don't... Just use your little 2 door and save time and money...

I imagine you can refuel in about 3-4 minutes also... It might still cost more (gas vs SC) depending on where you get gas, but what kind of commute are you going on (daily) that you need to charge up for every day?

I drive 88 miles for my commute (44 per way) plus a little more to run errands, so I 'plan' for 100 miles per day(only 3 days a week, much less the other 4), but even then I have my car set to charge up to 70% and it rarely uses more than 30% in a day... BUT, because I plug in every day at home I don't even notice the time I am SAVING from NOT going to the gas station twice a week like I used to... And of course it's saving me all that 'gas' money too! Last year I spent $1,327 to charge (82% at home and 18% at SCs) and SAVED $1,638! And that's with sky high prices for electricity in California! ($0.26 per kWh OFF PEAK!!)

But hey, any way I look at it, I have a car that is ALWAYS at 2/3rds of a 'tank' when I get up in the morning AND it's REALLY fun to drive (or, let IT drive!)...

I use our Model Y for the commute and the truck is used locally (gets better mileage local than long distance) for our businesses that my wife runs... Oh, and the CT charges mostly on solar, so it's cheap too!

  1. cheaper than petrol
  2. 250 kw charge stations are absolutely not rare to find
  3. i have never charged at a supercharger for an hour; that's absurd
  4. where have prices 3x'ed?

No I understand it’s a truck and should cost more. Given equal costs, the charging time is a dealbreaker. I can’t afford to lose that much time traveling for work in the morning. Tight schedule.
How far is your commute that you need to charge up daily?

I've charged for an hour in the CT a few times. Some of the older shared stalls that Tesla inputs into my route can take forever. I think the most was an hour and 20 min.

Road tripping in the CT is almost the same price in the south as road tripping in a gas vehicle. In some places can be cheaper in a gas F150. Electricity is only getting more expensive.

Where you save in an EV is home charging.

About dozen times a year I have to travel 250+ miles. Just saying on those 5% time I prob just use my gas car. I hope to get that range extender and that would solve the time crunch. However, SC costs still crazy. Why is Tesla charging so much these days?

I get it. V4 charge 15 mins or range extender would work for me. I know we’re still early. Hope the 3 or Y could get 400+ miles today.

That's great news. It will help offset some of the inconveniences of having less range. The catch as others mentioned will be the curve. I'm curious to see if it shows improvement.

Can confirm, as someone who lives in the south, it's roughly break even for fast charging when away from home; when compared to regular gas truck such as an F150 ecoboost. I ran the numbers when I was away from home for a few months and dependent on DC chargers.

I'm not sure what part of TN you're in, but about a year and in my prior EV truck I ran into the same issues as you in NW.KY. There weren't many fast charging options. However, the few that were there were primarily for Tesla's. I had a Lightning at the time, just before the stalls opened up to Ford.

You must live in Hawaii for the cost of supercharging to match that of gasoline.

I don't think Tesla makes any money on supercharging. They pass on the demand cost of the electricity.

No. South Carolina.

All over the South where gas is cheap.

I filled up a rental F150 for $83.88 ($2.33 per gallon). That's 36 gallons and I drove it to Tampa, Florida (almost 500 miles) and wasn't on empty.

I've spent over $80 on SC in my CT on that same trip before. On the return trips, I typically start at 10% or sometimes lower.

I typically average 80mph, sometimes up to 85, sometimes slowed in traffic.

Also, Tesla absolutely makes a profit on Super Charging. In 2022, Elon said they aim for 10% profitability on SC, with all cost included or 30% GM.

I believe they reinvest revenue that coming in from charging each year to continue growing and maintaining the network. I don't believe they will stop doing this any less than 10 years from now.

They are still marking up electricity to profit, regardless if they are re-investing or not. As time moves on and they slow expansion they will be a literal profit center. This is reported in their earnings as well.

I hope Tesla releases a software update to better filter the chargers on the map so one can toggle better 75/150/250/325 V4. I’d love to start my route plan with just 325V4 chargers available and then adjust to 250, etc if not suitable.

I assume they upped the margin on SC's once they opened it up to all vehicles. It'd bring on an anti-trust lawsuit for them to continue giving the discounts to Teslas, and there's no reason to subsidize all electric cars in America. Unless they were sticking to their original mission that is
