A couple of MY 4680 owners are saying the new cell is slower charging than the old batteries. I hope Cybercell 2.0 doesn’t have these issues…

Thoughts???

Cybercell is different but those videos were too long for me. Hopefully CT batteries are good

I think it's been true of every vehicle, until Tesla knows more about the pack they limit the charge curve. When I got my TM3 there were no v3 Superchargers so they had time to figure it out so that I could charge at 1000MPH when they did arrive.

There is also the rumor that the CyberTruck will charge at 1000v which will limit supercharging at full speed until the V4 chargers arrive

Hello! You go from a battery the size of your thumb, to a more dense battery the size of your fist and wonder if it charges slower than older batteries. It’s called resistance!

Internal resistance of the 4680 is actually much lower. The tabless design dissipates heat more effectively and should allow for higher charge rates, so IDK why the software is tapering the charge curve for these 1st gen cells.

Time will tell. Tesla would certainly not want it to be the case, and owners are sadly not any more reliable as a source of information than any other demographic. Some are anal and complain about everything and others never complain about anything (with everything in between).

Isn’t it possible they’re keeping it limited until they have more data from the fleet on the battery pack cycles and will in the future allow faster charge rates via OTA? My guess is they’re going to tinker around with it until they find the sweet spot of longevity vs charge rate.

It's a bit of a misconception, the tabless design does reduce internal resistance but it is negated by the increase in cell diameter. This graph from battery day actually shows a slight supercharge time increase, although it's hard to quantify given the y axis is not labeled.

in other news.

GM battery plant pay raises lead to layoffs, or bankruptcy, then government bailouts like old GM, Ford, and Chrysler?!
That is misleading. Google search for facts: https://www.google.com/search?q=gm+ultium+battery+pay+increases

That is misleading. Ford was not included. UAW wanted more than a wage of $16/hr.
The agreement comes after the United Auto Workers (UAW) poured some cold water on the EV transition by stating that Ultium jobs were expected to start at just $16/hour, rising to $20/hour after seven years of work. This is well below the $32/hour that GM workers would have earned had the Warren/Lordstown plant not been converted to an Ultium plant.

Ok ok, Ford hasn’t ever filed, it was only Henry Ford himself who filed twice. Stand corrected.

This chart shows a drastic increase in charge times with a "1 TAB" cell as the diameter increases, while showing a nearly flat line for the "TABLESS".

This was meant to demonstrate how the tabless design enables fast charging, regardless of the cell diameter.

That's the point, nearly flat, but there is a slight increase relative 2170 cells. How big that slight increase is in terms of time we cannot quantify given the y axis is not labeled.

It enables fast charging not faster charging.

No, you have completely misunderstood the point of this chart. The 2170 cells are not the baseline, they are the dashed red line that grows significantly ("1 TAB"), showing that they have a much longer charge time than the tabless design.

The purpose of this entire presentation was to tout the features of the new cell.
