This is awesome, And I just ordered some "Pull to Eject" lanyards. They aren't even here yet, and I'm going to have to return them.

Nice work! Nice to see an EE doing some good ME work 🙃.

There are some options like Slant3D, Shapeways/Thangs, etc. that could be used as a drop ship marketplace. Sadly I haven't run into anything as simple as SendCutSend's marketplace where you just upload a file, they take care of manufacturing/shipping/billing and then just send you whatever markup you decide on after the sale is made. Seems like a great opportunity for passive income.

Also following if anyone begins making for purchase. Would be happy to arrange payment via Venmo and provide shipping address, assuming cost is not exorbitant.

Might be a dumb question would it not have been more obvious to everyone just have a door handle to grab and use to open the door.
The Idea is less mechanical parts that wear. So in this case you can have a mechanical linkage and that will wear out in theory a lot quicker than an electronic switch over time. Think about the lines on the old school bicycles that had cables that ran to and fro. They either eventually had to be replaced or they broke or they didn't work like they used to. This would be the same case in a switch for a door handle. My lightspeed bicycle has hydraulic brake lines and wireless shifting. Getting rid of the mechanical linkages that had to be maintained and serviced.

Do the cycle repetitions on a door handle? Let's forget the early model S. But an electronic door handle in theory should work better than a mechanical door long-term.

That would be my guess why.

One can also go in on the service menu and spot out the troubles for switches that aren't working or are wrong by following the entire wire diagram on a truck. It's hard to do that with a mechanical linkage that relies on wires and pulleys

As a side note, I can tell you that in my suburban, Subaru and in my model S, all those seat cables that pulled or allowed to back seat to latch always failed in a matter of about a decade.

Tesla is certainly trying to reduce complexity and part count, but the impetus behind the soft-switch door release was the frameless windows: they will be damaged if not lowered. Earlier Teslas would just screech at the occupants for using the manual release, but later they also dropped the window to prevent damage, assuming the door was not flung open quickly.

They hide the rear manual release so that the child-lock feature is not easily thwarted. Note that in "traditional" vehicles with the child-locks enabled, escape is not possible. The interior latch is disabled, and there is no "emergency release".

The right answer is probably to install highly-visible releases all around, but require a very high force to activate them. This would discourage everyday use, and prevent small children from using them, but still work in an emergency.

lol. I had to put Mr. Yuk stickers on my front door emergency releases. The wife would use them every single time.

Yup. The struggle is real. I had to do something similar. Not a problem with the CT rear doors (or the driver door ), though.

Now if only we could get an emergency door release label for the front doors (or a mouse trap). I can't tell you how many people pull the emergency release when the regular door handle is labeled and visible right there, super annoying.
