How much free supercharging have Tesla owners used?

With the new promo being offered, who knows of people who have owned Teslas that have free supercharging, and how often do some use it? Is Tesla generous with the policy? I’ve heard about model X owners who had free supercharging and have driven 250,000 miles with it in a small handful of years without issue.

The Tesla Supercharger Fair Use Policy, embedded in their terms, hints at this flexibility. It’s designed more for referral-based free Supercharging (e.g., 1,000 miles or time-limited perks), where Tesla can restrict access if someone’s hogging the network or using it commercially—like charging a fleet or running a taxi service. For lifetime free Supercharging, there’s no explicit cap, but Tesla’s support pages and past actions suggest they monitor for outliers. For example, they’ve contacted owners with unusually high usage (think hundreds of Supercharges a year) to “discuss” their habits, and in rare cases, they’ve threatened to revoke privileges if it’s deemed abusive or if the car’s used for business purposes like ridesharing. No public data pins down an exact threshold, but X posts from owners suggest Tesla’s tolerant unless you’re blatantly exploiting it—say, charging daily at a Supercharger instead of home out of convenience.

It really seems entirely reasonable that a person use a supercharger for their daily commute. Not everyone lives close to their work. Other travel for work routinely. To tell people they have free lifetime supercharging but tell them they’re not actually able to use it as needed, seems like a problem. Particularly when Tesla went out of their way to not put any definition or thresholds on it.

For a quick data point... I have a Tesla charger at home in my wife's Model 3 spot. And at work we have 4 complimentary ChargePoint spots. In 3.5 months with the promotional free SuperCharging, my app shows I've done 18% SuperCharger, 37% Other (Work) and 45% home. If I had my second home charger set up, I would probably be more like 4%SC, 6%Work, 90%Home. Home is just so much easier, even if it means maneuvering into a tiny one car garage while your wife is out and about! :D

Well, when the perk is free supercharging, that becomes pretty nice, and pretty convenient. ? I spoke to a Tesla rep on the phone a few weeks ago, they indicated that expecting to use it unencumbered, without concern, should be a person’s expectation. They said they had never heard of anybody who had it removed, and that management had confirmed for them the same and that it would really only occur if a vehicle were salvaged, and deemed not safe for the supercharging network.

Well I can tell you my first Tesla, an MS 60, purchased in 2014, had free lifetime SC. I sold it last year, after driving it for 10 years. It had 227,000 miles on it, and I never paid a cent to charge it. And, I never heard anything from anyone about too much usage. But that is just my experience. YMMD.

We have had free supercharging on our model x since 2016. Last year they let us transfer it to a model x refresh. By my math, we have used about $36k worth of supercharging since 2016.
never an issue. The Cybertruck may be a stickier issue because it charges faster, has high capacity (especially with a range extender) but most importantly PowerShare. The model x never had the potential to say…air condition your house or level 2 charge your model 3.
So far, Tesla has been true to word for us though.

Sadly I bought mine about two months before there was free supercharging on offer.
The only consolation is that I got a good deal from someone who had bought it and it just wasn’t his thing. In Arizona that saved me a ton of money in taxes and fees too.
I also wrapped it and did some interior mods which made reading it for another with free SC financially unattractive.
Very jealous of those who have it.

I have an X we got 3 years free supercharging. Have only charged it at the superchargers, no issues.
We also have a 2014 S life time supercharging. Again 100% charging at Teslas supercharger without any issues.
My CB I got without supercharging really wish it would have had it but guess you can’t get free charging for every car you own.
Charge stats for my S and X are in the photos.
