The EV truck market will eventually have its Model 3 moment. The only thing that sucks is Tesla is not making the vehicle which will drive EV truck sales, unless they are holding the secret very close.

There were over 130k Ford Mavericks sold in 2024. A truck of this size would make more sense for current EV technology, and the size is obviously popular. As much as this forum is knocking Ford for stopping Lightning production, if they nail the execution of their smaller EV truck, it is the right move. If they don't nail an EV truck in that form factor, someone else will, and it will do numbers.

My Beast isn't going anywhere, but give me a sub-3 second 0-60 small truck that is easy to maneuver, has a good infotainment system, and doesn't look like crap and it will be added to my garage. The Lightning already had more zip than the AWD CT, so I imagine the Ford engineers could make something fun to drive around town in the small EV truck segment.

It's curious that all of this is happening at a time when battery prices have once again dropped, with no end in sight. We are close to the point where BEVs should actually be cheaper to manufacture than ICEs. In fact it's possible parity has already been reached and that manufacturers are just trying to balance out R&D cost. For those who continue to invest in EVs, that poses a bright future.

Locally I've seen many hybrids already being more expensive than equivalent BEVs. Which makes me frequently question the sanity of the people buying the former.

To be fair, lets not pretend it's the only vehicle/truck with flaws. knock on wood, except for crappy infotainment software my truck has had no problems.
*Maybe we should move back to The Lightning Forum, LOL

Agreed, the 2022 Lightning was great, then the year 2023 came and they did a little cutting the fat to make up cost.

The Lightning I had I had great hopes for. As couldn’t afford the NEW $119k Cybertruck we all were originally enticed with as $69k.

Back to the truck, after three high voltage issues, one low voltage, one shifter and finally voltage regulator.

The truck was junk and had to liquidate.

So glad you are having a good run! Take care.

Well no politics, and don’t know what is happening in our little world, but the price of a gallon of gas was $1.93 this week, hasn’t been that low since 1991 after the Gulf War and Bush Sr was in office?

Say all that to speculate, don’t see EV sales increasing if we continue the trend of low gas prices?

Good point. Not many people would buy a maverick to tow long distances. It sucks to tow with long distance. I know. I had to stop for gas more often than my wife had to charge her MY. I was just pulling a light single axle flat trailer with a motorcycle and a couple of garage items during a move.

But, the people who are buying the Maverick are people who need a vehicle to commute in but still want to be able to do weekend projects with a truck. That's me! It's the ideal segment for an EV truck. Heck, even 200 miles would be enough range. Maybe less. But, of course, you have to give a lot of range because people are still of the mindset "I don't want to have to get gas every day." when plugging in when you get home is simple.

The Maverick numbers will be even better for 2025. Through November, Ford has already sold nearly 142,000 in the US alone (not including Canada).

I bet those "Maverick people" lean more urban/surburban than the "F150-Silverado-Ram people". And I bet those Maverick people are a lot more receptive to EVs.

The three top-selling vehicle categories are: sedans, SUVs, and pickups. Telsa has a best-selling inexpensive EV sedan (Model 3) and a best-selling inexpensive EV SUV (Model Y). If Tesla had an inexpensive EV pickup to go with the M3 and MY, it would be a best seller too.

Smaller EV has smaller battery packs and EV Mavericks might find themselves charging every one to two days.

Now that winter hit our daily drivers are the opposite.

One is V8 6.2L daily driver all over town and it only fills up every 7-8 days. While the MY as cold as it is only drives 14-20 miles a day and it has to be charged daily at home to keep it from sending cold weather warnings up on the screen.

Note: Battery health is good.

Citing Ark is like citing Reddit. They are completely unrealistic and make up their numbers.

Their bear case for 2025 was 5 million deliveries and a gross margin per vehicle of 40%, . Outside of the initial rise, they have over inflated and been wrong on Tesla consistently.

Tesla will be under 1.7 million deliveries and have 17.2% vehicle margins in 2025.
I agree with Cathie Woods on a lot of her off the cuff ideas but the results I have seen from Ark models could hardly be described as reliable or realistic. They are moonshot funds

Maybe thats why they scrapped the RWD? Not good to have price overlap between your two categories of products.
The high end let’s call it “Cybertruck light” should not be priced the same as the low end Cybertruck.
The highest priced model y trim is still quite a bit less than the entry level x. Same is true of the 3 and S I think.

Ironically Toyota just came out with an EV Hilux. It’s even available here in Finland.

it’s rubbish though. As Toyota hasn’t exactly been pro-electric it’s probably available to tick some political box or to be able to say ‘Well, that didn’t sell well’, which it won’t.

Love my BEV truck, unfortunately it came 5-10 years too soon, depending on battery development, could be longer.
So the cost is high with imposed limits.
The Cybertruck wasn’t built for cost savings, it was pumped full of innovation and “cool factor”.

I hung out with my buddies Maverick for a day, it’s a vehicle for people that live within economic constraint (imposed or not). I see its purpose, but I didn’t feel inspired.

Also in recent years I’ve had an excess of patients being permanently disabled in motor vehicle collisions, this has persuaded me to select a vehicle that has safety ratings and… mass. I am not looking for a small vehicle. Every time I drive by a m3 my front end is basically at the level of someone’s upper thorax and feel as if I have an advantage should a collision occur. I understand this last bit is subjective and less important to some.

LOL. As a Maverick person, I agree.

My Maverick was a hybrid and I managed to get 40+mpg easily. The fastest truck out there? No. Pull a house off it's foundation? No. Fun to drive? Oddly, yes.

I had my Maverick while waiting on my CT. Two things I noted quite often:
1. It needed a slightly stronger electric motor to keep the gas engine from having to step in. Sure, it would be great to have cybertruck torque but realistically, 10-20% more torque would have been enough to keep the motor from running.
2. It needed a little larger battery and more aggressive regen. It just didn't have enough juice available for more than just a couple of no-gas miles.

Bottom line: It was a fun Truck and right sized. If Ford had made it a plug-in hybrid (people don't plug them in so they aren't as efficient as they could be) and given it a little more capability of gasless miles, I would have had a much harder time justifying the huge jump to the Cybertruck.

If Ford comes out with a Plug-in Hybrid Maverick with 20-40 miles of all-electric range, they'll have a HUUUUGE hit on their hands.

P.S. The Maverick was NOT a great tow machine but was great in parking lots, commuting, and Home Depot runs.

In my line of work, Semi Truck drivers are absolute morons. Do yourself a favor everyone, drive something big.

That line of thinking just leads to a never-ending cycle of bigger and bigger and heavier vehicles.

I really hope we can put a stop to that trend.
