You can get more range than that. A 2025 F-150 XLT, 4-door Supercrew, 5.5-ft bed, 2.7L V6 turbo, has USEPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon. A 36-gallon gas tank is standard. So that's a highway range of 900 miles, or more than 1,400 km.

A Lariat with the same specs, but with the 5.0L V8, is still rated for 24 mpg on the highway. So highway range of 850 miles, or more than 1,350 km.
Yeah, for certain buyers losing that range is a deal-breaker. I have a lot of friends that work in the woods or fields all day and won't see charging infrastructure while the sun is up. Tesla needs a battery option of at least 400 - probably 500 - miles to even get consideration from those buyers.

I think they need the current AWD version to be about $10k less to reach the bulk of the family hauler/weekend warrior segment, and then offer a 400+ range version at around current pricing to appeal to those that need it. Those two changes and they're selling 2-3X as many Cybertrucks.

Rivian will even sell you one. I’ve checked. No self-driving features, obviously, but it can be had. Both Tesla and Rivian need to catch up to each other in different ways lol
Rivian is working on it. Next Thursday, December 11, is "Rivian Autonomy and AI Day". Some kind of product announcement is expected. It may not match FSD (Supervised), but it may narrow the gap.

I'd be looking at a smaller Taco-sized truck that strips things like the bed cover, RWS, etc but uses similar steel, batteries to create some economies of scale.
I think there would be a significant market for a smaller EV truck (comparable to a Tacoma or Maverick). But Ford, Kia, and Slate think so too, and they are all likely to get there before Tesla.

I wish them luck, but I expect to be pretty unimpressed. Yeah, I’m a Tesla fan, but I also really do root for all EV/autonomy companies because options are good things. It’s just that no one has ever given Tesla any slight amount of competition, no matter how wild your imagination is.

If they would lower the price I would get one.
I've had 9 Ford trucks since May of 2001. That's an average of one new truck every 32 months. I won't buy another one as long as I have (or can get) a Cybertruck. That's not a very big dent, I know, but it's a dent, nonetheless. Moving forward 24 years, that would cost Ford $86,000 (Priced how I'd buy it and rounded down to the nearest $1k) times 9. That's $774,000 over 24 years. IDK the profit from those 9 trucks but I imagine it would hurt if there's 1,000 of people like me out there who have switched.

CT in 2026?

My hunch for 2026: A relaunched RWD trim at a lower price point and/or a ā€œStandardā€ $69,990 AWD Cybertruck that has been de-contented.

The first RWD effort at $69,990 was a big miss. It was $10k overpriced considering the de-contenting of equipment. No rolling tonneau cover, no smugglers bay in the bed, a basic sound system, no air suspension, etc. The concept was good but Tesla totally missed the target on the MSRP. I’d be willing to bet that less than 1k RWD CT’s were manufactured.

At $60,990 I think the RWD trim would have been successful but I don’t know if margins would allow for a $61k Cybertruck.

I guess they don’t right now. They initially said $60,990 with no mention of excluded features other than a range drop from likely a smaller battery. They kept the big battery which was good, but took too many other features away. Really too bad.

I’ll tell you, I’m not really an SUV dude, but the Cadillac Escalade IQ with its 460 miles (!) apparently real world has my full attention!!!!

Even has four wheel steering!

Likewise. I’d buy it if FSD was licensed to it.

šŸ’Æ wouldn’t even be a question and Tesla should’ve never let this happen! I shouldn’t even be remotely interested in that thing. I’ve never been interested in an Escalade before, but people who have been in it absolutely love it!!!!

Out of Spec motoring is running one in their new ā€œeastern edgeā€ EV race and Kyle and company can’t say enough nice things about it they absolutely love it! Massaging seats, heads up display, all of the best Cadillac/GM suspension features and then almost 500 miles of actual range it’s a winner for sure!!! As the good doctor (@hemiarch) said, the only thing it’s missing is FSD and Kyle thinks that blues cruise or whatever the fuck it is is nearly perfect on the highway so you’re only missing it on city streets.

I’m telling you right now if I wasn’t geared more towards off-road I think I might be picking one of these up and possibly trading in my CT for for it. 😬

I already have FSD and two other vehicles and if the new roadster ever gets released, I still might be a buyer of that one for a third.

😬😬

I don’t know man … I am really tempted by this thing. Definitely doesn’t help that: (1) 14.x it has been quite disappointing in many ways and (2) I’ve got some rust issues with my CB that I’m really pissed off about right now.

I see all the talk is ā€œtruckā€ comps, but I was not remotely interested in any ICE truck and did my cross shopping vs EV SUVs. Test drove Rivian R1S both gens, Porsche Macan S, Audi Q tron, Volvo XC90 ev and Polster (forgot model). They all are priced about the same or more in the case of Porsche. Cayenne was not available at that time but would have been interested for more room over Macan. But in the end decided to stick with Tesla for FSD and charging convenience for long distance driving. I was trying to convince few of my friends (driving Cayenne, Range Rover and MB suv) who were checking my CT to be their next purchase and their comments in addition to it looks butt ugly was ā€œcheap on the insideā€ and ā€œplastickyā€ ! Not interested in the tech it has !

That’s why it’s my spirit vehicle. Cheap on the inside. Like me. šŸ˜Ž
same boat as you. I was shopping for an adventure vehicle, not necessarily a truck.

We’ll have to see how it goes. Objectively, from a business standpoint, it wouldn’t be the worst idea anyone ever had to discontinue S/X/CT.

Selfishly I want CT around forever. My current truck won’t last me the rest of my life, so I need another one someday.

Elon said they needed a truck to fully solve sustainable energy, and I agree. CT is the greatest vehicle ever conceived, but it’s clearly not the answer Elon was looking for. There’s no denying that. CT isn’t making the slightest dent in F150/RAM/Silverado sales.

Maybe Tesla needs to cave and offer an inferior, more conventional truck? Idk, I’m glad I’m not the one making the decisions right now.
Whatever they do, it would have to have a major impact on the price. If the original price points had been hit, that would have heavily dented the market. With the current prices, in this economy, I just don’t see that happening. Hurt further by being the only Tesla car that can’t properly be sold internationally.
