My premium connectivity just ended. I’ve been using Bluetooth audio and I think the sound quality is slightly degraded. I believe CarPlay audio would be better similar to native apps. Remote Sentry view is really the only reason I want premium. About damn time Tesla!
I was under the impression that Bluetooth could use the same bitrates as Premium Audio. Is that not the case?

Wouldn't it use Bluetooth?
CarPlay uses both (Bluetooth for handshake, WiFi for data). The client (car) operates basically as a dumb terminal so that's why higher-bandwidth WiFi is needed (the phone is essentially streaming its display to the car...which is how Apple can completely revamp the interface if they wanted, and existing cars won't need modification).

Does Tesla's native audio use Bluetooth between the phone and car for music data?

I think it’s about data connection speed. Tesla apps stream directly from source. Bluetooth transfer max out. CarPlay uses WiFi which is better. It’s noticeable to an audiophile like me.

The apps (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) don't need a phone; they use the vehicle's cellular data plan (so Premium Connectivity is required due to the higher use).

The "basic" audio can use the phone to stream music via Bluetooth. But apparently Bluetooth doesn't have enough bandwidth to reliably carry both music + video data to the display. I'm pretty sure the video signal is losslessly compressed to avoid artifacting so it's relatively high bandwidth.

Side story: Hyundai's 2022-era Tucson had wired + wireless CarPlay in their lower-end models, but the high-end trim only got wired CarPlay. Popular rumor(???) was that it was due to a licensing issue with Apple regarding the bigger display in the higher-end models. Years later, MacRumors reported that Hyundai was going to release a software update to unlock wireless CarPlay on the higher trim levels, but I don't think that ever materialized.

Yes wired connection sounds better than any wireless which is basically Tesla apps. CarPlay is a software update to stream the phone.

Mark this post for the Holiday Update...Mark Gurman is wrong, this is AirPlay functionality, not CarPlay functionality.

CarPlay for Wazes' speed trap and road hazard warnings and Tesla's nav for chargers, pre-conditioning. Look forward to it.

I use the Tesla app from Tidal to stream high-bitrate audio from the vehicles internal memory. I download the tracks to the car (with graphics) from my home wi-fi, then I play them from memory as I drive. It sounds great, noticeably better than audio streamed over premium connectivity.

You can already use wi-fi to stream high-bitrate audio to the Tidal app that came with your Tesla. I do it in my 2018 Model 3 Performance, 2024 Model 3 Performance, and my Cybertruck.

I want a better media player and Tesla has ignored this, so if we get Apple Car Play, then at least I can get on the app store.

I am sure I am the only one, but I hate waze. I find it distracting with it constantly asking you questions... police activity... is it still there???? Car on side of road.... is it still there????
Who are these people that are so excited to put in these notifications? I have ridden thousands of miles with people and myself using waze and no one I know has ever marked anything or confirmed anything. could be some form of OCD for me but the constant nagging from that app annoys me to no end. Lastly the cartoon interface is also off putting to me.

I use the web browser to play SXM instead of paying again I have it in my ford and Porsche. I use it in those cars because we do not have good steady connection to cellular network where I live and drive to town and those cars have satellite antenna. I have a lot of MP3's from my record and CD collection that I load onto phone also.
just got a free starlink mobile unit, they are giving them away if you are home subscriber, so will test it when it arrives.
