NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Lemonade (NYSE: LMND), the digital insurance company powered by AI and social impact, today announced the launch of Lemonade Autonomous Car insurance, a first-of-its-kind product designed specifically for self-driving cars, starting with Tesla FSD.

The new offering cuts per-mile rates for FSD-engaged driving by approximately 50%, reflecting what the data shows to be significantly reduced risk during autonomous operation. Lemonade expects further reductions as Tesla releases FSD software updates, which are anticipated to make the cars even safer over time.

The launch is the result of a technical collaboration with Tesla, giving Lemonade access to vehicle data that was previously unavailable. Data captured then feeds into Lemonade’s usage-based risk prediction models, already among the most advanced in the industry, to uniquely distinguish between autonomous and human driving, as well as predict risk based on the autonomous software version installed in the car, the precision of its sensors, and more.

Lemonade supports intermittent use of FSD, as well as households with a mix of Teslas and standard non-FSD vehicles from other manufacturers, all under one policy. Customers can also unlock additional discounts for safe driving behavior, as well as savings for bundling with Lemonade’s Homeowners, Renters, and Pet insurance.

Lemonade’s approach reflects its broader strategy of using AI to gain operational efficiency and pricing accuracy, passing savings directly to customers. The company has stated its ambition to become the lowest-cost, best-experience insurance in the world, and Lemonade Autonomous Car insurance is another step toward that goal.

The product will begin rolling out in Arizona on January 26 and in Oregon a month later.

Considering Tesla insurance is not the lowest available rate in my area, I wonder how low lemonade can go. Tesla already has FSD data and should be the same exact model as what lemonade is proposing.

Personally I've stopped using the big brother spy apps that insurance providers offer for a 10% discount. The savings are not worth the grief I feel every time I speed, take a sharp turn, brake hard or touch my phone for 5 seconds.

I need to know exactly what data they are getting from me. If it’s just FSD % and miles driven, fine. But driving habits, launches, location, speed, etc, is a deal breaker.

Switched to them from Progressive (who were already by far the cheapest option for us) last month. Lemonade was about 30% cheaper than Progressive, and we just passed our first month; the spy algorithm reduced the premium by another couple of %. A couple of observations:

• Progressive uses Snapshot to spy. For what it is, it's very functional, as as long as you remember to check, you can delete a drive if you weren't driving, see how you're doing, and review every drive if you want. Lemonade is nothing like that, it's a black box, and you just get a summary (below) after a month (and presumably every month).
• We've used them for our dog insurance for a few years, and they're truly great. Extremely easy to put in a claim, all handled via the app. We have French bulldogs, so, many issues(!) and many claims, but the claims process is about as frictionless as it can be.
• We don't drive a lot of miles, this month was around 650. I do think Lemonade is more geared to a UBI model (Usage Based Insurance), which to some extent they all are, but I think it's one of their key pricing criteria, and thus, penalization criteria if you suddenly go on a bunch of road trips, so it might not be a good option for higher-mileage drivers.
• We're in TX, so none of this has the FSD discount applied. I really don't use FSD much, but certainly would use it more if tied to the insurance.

My only concern would be if I decide to get "illegal" and have some fun will it cause my rates to go up? I've never had an accident and never filed a claim. Haven't had a ticket in 18 years.
