New Solid State Battery shown at CES - Game Changer??

A company called Donut Labs is showing an operational solid state battery in a Verge motorcycle at the Consumer Electronics Show currently underway in Las Vegas.

The stated specs look extremely promising, almost "unicorn" like! A battery that is cheaper to make, safer (no fire hazard!), stores 400 Wh/kg energy and can be fully charged in 5 minutes with a 100,000 lifetime charge cycles! I am waiting for more information and some independent verifications but if all this is true it is a game changer for EV's (and everything else battery powered!). Where do I sign up for new batteries in my CT?

I hope these guys are ready to become very wealthy. BTW, Donut labs is still a private company.

QuantumScape is another solid state battery company. JB (co-founder of Tesla) is on the board. As far as I know, they do not have a shipping product yet and they've been on it for over 15 years.

The problem has always been making the batteries outside of the lab, at scale for the mass market.

Not that this isn't a great accomplishment, but this is production for likely a very low volume niche product.

Donut is a Finnish company, and they have been creating a fair bit of chatter after this announcement. They do not apparently have any patents filed, and no concrete information about production and materials. In an earlier interview Nordic Nano, which Donut has a stake in (and which Donut is highly likely to be working with), stated they had worked with some 'German innovators' on a battery. After some digging around I currently believe it could be this company:

Many of the claims match Donut's, including being able to produce quickly. The timeline also matches. The one specification that does not is energy density. HPB's is only 150Wh/kg, which is pretty much what we already have. That is stated for their own battery, but they also talk about using their electrolyte solution in other batteries, specifically for automotive use, so perhaps with a different application the density can be boosted.

It is also possible it is not this company, but some other Germans. But given how well the claims match, I would definitely consider this to be a prime suspect.

The jump in KW/kg is decent and once we have them the future products likely to improve. But lithium also continues to improve. Someone has probably done all the math but there is some KwH/kg/dollar that kills ICE and cures my range anxiprt and everyone else.

The first commercial deliveries of the Verge TS Pro electric motorcycle, equipped with Donut batteries, are supposedly scheduled for 1Q 2026 (so within weeks). If Donut and Verge deliver on that 1Q 2026 timeline, we could get our first good look at solid-state batteries sooner rather than later.

Verge is a Finnish company (like Donut) and has been delivering electric motorcycles since 2021. Cost of the new solid-state model appears to be relatively high, supposedly $30,000 to $35,000 depending on battery size. But claimed specs are impressive.

The new TS Pro will be available with either a 20.2-kWh or 33.3-kWh battery pack. The smaller unit has a range of 217 miles, while the extended-range can travel up to 370 miles on a single charge, according to the Verge website. Just as impressive is that 186 miles of range can be added after just 10 minutes connected to a NACS fast charger, which makes topping up the bike not all that different from filling up an ICE model with gas.

The TS Pro’s improved efficiency doesn’t come at the cost of performance. Verge still tout’s the bike’s “supercar power.” The hubless motor makes 136.8 hp and 737 ft lbs of torque. Thanks to all that grunt the motorcycle can zoom from zero to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 124 mph. We have a feeling even the purists out there will be impressed by those numbers.

As impressive as this all may sound, it’s easy to be skeptical since the TS Pro will be the first EV—motorcycle or larger—sold with a solid-state battery in the U.S. Still, Verge and Donut Lab seem quite confident they can deliver on their ambitious promises. The motorcycle maker says that it will begin deliveries of its new bike, which starts at $29,900 but costs at least $34,900 with the extended-range battery pack, in the first quarter of 2026.

Or, would they be rolling around in billions of dollars from Samsung, Panasonic, Tesla, etc. as they all desperately vie for licensing deals, or buyouts?

They could do both. The motorcycle deal with Verge could be an initial "proof of concept". If it works out, then Donut could approach Samsung, Panasonic, Tesla etc., armed with proof that their battery is successful in a real-world commercial product. In that case, it's not just vaporware.

Supposedly a new Verge TS Pro motorcycle with a 33.3 kWh Donut battery will be $34,900.

Compare to a new Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD with a 69 kWh battery at $36,990. Obviously the Model 3 has the much larger battery -- plus thousands of pounds of other hardware that a motorcycle lacks.

Yet the cost for the two vehicles is almost the same. You have to suspect that those Donut batteries aren't inexpensive, at least not yet.

Except Donut says they don't use lithium. Donut is also partnered with a capacitor company so that seems a more likely technology considering claimed cycle life and charge rates. Would be a massive breakthrough in capacitor energy density though. Ziroth comes to that conclusion:
