is there a decent installation guide that comes with the equipment? i'd like to install it myself.

Not to be a jerk, but if you search "powershare" on this forum it would probably provide your answer about a million times. Currently, it is not user-installable.

While the Wall Connector is in the realm of an experienced DIYer, the Gateway requires modifing the main electrical service including pulling the meter. Tesla only ships Gateways to its approved installer.

Even if you were able to get your hands on a gateway, Tesla controls the software and you couldn't use it anyways for home back up.
