new speedometer cluster?

I am gonna install a 3rd party HUD display(wiring through the dashboard), and three billboards(a tribute to the movie) on that vast dash space to break even CT $.

Hold off on that purchase. The wiring diagram had a bundle terminate near where a HUD might go - we discussed on a previous string. Maybe HUD will be there - it certainly makes sense with no traditional speedometer display

Elon thinks HUDs are a bit overblown.

The Driver's Display wasn't on the original prototype, either. Maybe it'll show up later on a Plaid version or something, or maybe never. Who knows?

That driver's display was very real. It was on the version of CT that was driven on stage at CyberRodeo in April of last year. I wish they had kept it since the experience of driving and monitoring FSD and Autopilot on the driver's display is way better than having everything crammed onto a single screen. Since there is a front bumper camera on the truck, that display would have been perfect for.

The arguments against the driver binnacle are odd. It isn't as if doing so would then push the price of the truck to an exorbitant amount. And I've seen the 3rd party screen and app and that's silly because an integrated solution that's supported by Tesla is always best.

While not a dealbreaker for me, I think it's one of the worst decisions that Tesla has backed out of.

I agree, 100%??

Every little thing raises the price. Takes alot of little things to get the price down.

Especially if the did make the side mirrors easily removable, having an option for a persistent view of both the left and right side camera view in the left and right side of the instrument cluster would have been a huge help. Also, I’m considering a Model Y for my wife next year and I’m not a fan of the aftermarket options out there quite honestly. They look cheap-ish and obviously aftermarket, just not a fan.

Like you, while not a dealbreaker, this is one thing I am disappointed not to see included especially if certain variants of the Cybertruck get to Model S and X prices.

Ford added HUD. I have friends with vehicles and HUDs and absolutely love them.

I haven't had it on a car. Looked at a few aftermarket solutions, none real clean. But I have quite a bit of time behind one in a few different aircraft. There are pilots that can't/won't make the transition, and those that are addicts. I'm an addict. Unbelievable situational awareness. I can only image how great that could be for a car/truck.

[Albern]

Hear me out Tesla. I'll shut up about the driver's display, just give us this.

[JBee]

There's gotta be an app for that!

It's a shame my jokes are taking way to seriously here. With all my monkeying around you'd think I really do have hairy palms. ?

I'd take a HUD over single screen FUD any day. At some point every screen will be replaced with a hologram with tactile feedback, so why avoid the inevitable and just imbrace the tech we already have, and is easy to implement and common in millions of other vehicles already. I had it in my first Prius more than 20 years ago...HUDs are last millennia tech.

The real "integration" of the driver into the vehicle system is to give the driver all relevant information without the driver having to look for it or even worse dig around in a menu to use it, that then turns something else off. (I'm looking at you Tesla battery monitor and nav)

As PilotPete points out, "situational awareness" is king, meaning in particular that taking your eyes of the road for anything should be avoided.

This means in principle that reality should be augmented with information technology, like through a heads up display, and not like is currently the case on Teslas, by way of a screen, which you have to focus on separately from the operation of the vehicle.

I'm sure that fighter pilots with HUDs would out perform any pilot that has none. Especially considering that target information is placed in the HUD, and is even 360 in helmet HUDs. This applies to a car as well, in that the Tesla screen already shows the positions of other vehicles that it knows are sharing the road. So why would you hide that info down low, where you have to refocus you eyes everytime? Now with digital cameras all around this seems even more stupid, if you have to page through menus to display the exact one you want. It's frankly dumb IMHO and step backwards from the future of how it should be done.

The cost is negligible, and if "adding a screen" would be so costly bla bla bla, then why does the Highlander and CT have rear screens now? Wouldn't driver ergonomics and safety trump rear seat entertainment? I suppose that depends on how rowdy your kids are in the back...

Plus there's a heap of driving data that is not even shown on screen, that is readily available seeing it is connected to the Web already. Things like weather or road conditions, even traffic could better integrated. You just have to run gmaps at the same time to see the difference. The GUI could also do with an update, needs much more context based inputs and less menus to scroll through and find.

EM is obviously missing a negative feedback loop on this.

I assume there will be buttons on the yoke for turn signals unless that is handled by the brain implant.

Don't need the implant for this. The AI will just do the signals for you. It already knows where you are going and the best way to get there. It will tell you when to change lanes.

As for all the people wanting HUD or other situational awareness... That is old school. This vehicle is going to be driving better than you and will protect you from all the crazy mistakes you already make driving. Not only is Elon trying to reduce parts to save money, he is trying to rely less on your attention span to save lives. The less you as a human are involved in the driving the better (and safer for the rest of us).

You assume one has purchased the FSD.

I have not.

I can barely afford the dual-motor version let alone a piece of software I refuse to use let alone pay for.

I say this having retired from 38 years in I.T. A.I. may be advancing rapidly, but legislation governing it is not. Between that and federally mandated backdoors (don't even think for a second that that has not already happened) which will allow legislative bodies to insert a code snippet that supports whatever idiotic idea pops into their tiny brains and will likely cause the largest automotive accident in the history of the automobile.

Another (much more likely) scenario would be getting the FSD damaged with badly coded OTA update and the vehicles driving themselves off to cause mayhem somewhere.

Something like this recently happened to cloud connected 3D printers from Bambu Labs. A badly written update caused thousands of printers around the world to spontaneously start printing some random nonsense and damaged a large portion of the devices.

Oh, you wouldn't believe the things in the aviation pipeline...

You assume one has purchased the FSD.

Actually, not my assumption. You could be in a robotaxi. If you are having a hard time paying for the vehicle in the first place, you might very well find yourself not even needing the vehicle fairly soon. And if you can't afford FSD, I'm guessing that the brain implant isn't in the cards either.

Really though, I wasn't being specific to you and your exact situation.
