FSD Fail 💀 Almost Died

[kimble.dave]

A little dramatic, almost died? Grow up! You should be paying attention, I admit I don’t always pay as much attention as I should, but use common sense! Intersections, turns, merges, and lane changes you need to pay 100% attention!

Just curious , did you have a merge lane the CT could have stayed in ? I have had my truck ignore the merge lane and move right into the traffic lanes, it has not been a problem like this and I stay extra vigilant when changing lanes. It does not stay to the right as it should and sometimes stays right when it should not. THis especially occurs when I merge and there is a right fork in the merge lane. All should beware of this.

Swap the Tacoma for an 18 wheeler and surely it's death..

Good point. But I wonder if FSD would have actually fared better there?

Join the club. FSD is not ready for prime time. One day it will be. One day.

The key to safe driving is anticipation of possible events and taking measures to avoid or mitigate them. We were trained to keep our eyes on the horizon while constantly checking mirrors. You should be prepared for near-field events long before you get there. FSD can't see far enough to do that. FSD seems to be (at this point) based on relatively near-field reactions. The fast computer reaction is something Musk mentions often as a reason why FSD is safer than humans. The fast reaction is nice to have, but safe driving means you try to avoid having to make such fast reactions. Until FSD can see further and has a more sophisticated strategy rather than just reactions, it will be limited and need a lot of supervision. It seems like they are making small steps in that direction. For example it seems better at anticipating obvious things like approaching a red light. It used to wait until the red light was very near and then make a rapid deceleration. Ironically, it probably would ding my safety score if I did that. Now it seems a little smoother in this situation.

In this particular case, the human driver should see this intersection a long way off and take appropriate action. I am amazed at two things. The first is that the driver didn't take control immediately -- no way I would risk an accident to see if FSD could handle it -- but that's a personal choice. The second is that so many people would attack them for documenting this. If I can steal a line from Pulp Fiction, FSD is long f'ing way from perfect. I'd be happy just to get back assisted cruise control. I am confident that FSD will continue to get better.

judging by the click-baity title and the OP refusing to provide further context (and a history of spreading FUD), I'd say yes.

User error. Wasn't supervising.

I have the latest version of FSD on my CT CB and agree that FSD isn't ready for prime time. Stuff like what you posted, happens to me occasionally. Sometimes I really wonder about all the YouTube videos showing an hour's worth of driving with NO interventions. I can't get mine to go 15 minutes without an intervention. And many times its just basic driving, nothing complicated or in construction zones.

I think the current version is equivalent to a "first time/day" teen-age driver.

But the software is getting better, the first version I had, needed intervention 3 times in my 11 mile drive to work. Now, I only need to intervene once or twice. And I also have to "nudge" it once or twice.

It will be great in no time, just be patient....

FSD failed big time. I almost died. No amount of manual intervention could have prevented it. Good thing the other driver swerved. FSD is fatally flawed.

[mbeltran]

Guess what? So are most “meat-sack” drivers.

Skippy would agree

It ends very quickly.

The Red car actually had the right of way;
but it would have been common courtesy for them to allow you to merge. Since they didn't, it's up to you to avoid the accident.
FSD doesn't account for the human element.

My oh my, so glad you lived to tell your tale of terror. It would seem that the Tesla is possessed by oh I don't know ... maybe

How so? Looks to me like the Cybertruck blew through (I assume) a yield sign into the path of traffic with a green light. Could the red truck have moved over, sure; but they pretty clearly had the right of way and FSD should have yielded.

That's exactly the kind of thing that needs to be fixed before FSD (Supervised) can become FSD.

Cybertruck driver still ultimately responsible, looks like FSD was coming into that (assumed) yield way too quickly.

I agree: This is simply a bad exchange, even driving, you'd have to crane your neck to 'look' for on coming vehicles.

I see this is CA - and there are lots of exchanges like this and 'blind' Fwy 'zipper' merges. [and my God very few drivers know how to zipper!]

I doubt there is even a 'yield' sign.

Agree also: had that been a collision : CT would be 'at fault' as the CT is merging into traffic.

The CT cameras are not positioned to 'look' at lanes so tangent to the vehicle.

Hopefully in the future FSD & AI will have some 'persistent local memory' as us humans do, to 'recall' certain locations and adapt. Currently every mile of FSD is simply focuses on the adjacent 20' around the vehicle.

I see this in FSD, it 'changes' lanes kinda randomly, seems to default to wanting to be in the far right lane : The MOST DANGEROUS lane to drive in...it also does not go to the left lanes on 'long' drives. It would drive 100 miles in the far right lane the whole way!...Which is 'discourteous' and adds congestions and increases risk on the far right lane - the merge lane.

It will adapt over time..

Regards
Jack

Yup, there is a Yield there. It's possible that FSD just didn't correctly estimate the interference from that vehicle due to the unusual angle and/or lack of a merge lane.

It's also entirely possible that OP's vehicle was not on FSD.
