At $200 I’m going to proceed with the ppf experiment mostly because it sounds fun, but I won’t be heartbroken if it doesn’t work.
Thinking about that too. Wonder if my Cricut will cut PPF. 🤔 Might have to swing by an installer and ask for some remnants.

It’s pretty cheap in small quantities

I put it on all my magnets. Except the Christmas lights because they don’t stay on that long.

Hello all.

Totally reminds me of this:
Tesla Cybertruck Front license plate camera glass getting worn from road stuff - any replacement or protection options? 1764794597571-jl

We had one, briefly, but turns out if your dogs are arseholes, they get practically rabid inside the porthole whenever anything is nearby, and cover it in slobber and god knows what.

Anyway.

The side cameras are really easy to protect (not that they really need it), we actually tested hydrophobic film for those, and it works great, but the project sort of died on the vine as we couldn't figure out a solution for the front. The concept was essentially a hard contact lens (no bezel), but we couldn't get it past the concept stage. Obviously with the porthole things, fogging can be an issue, but if the main goal is protection more than anything else, it's easy enough to add breather holes.

If it's any consolation, Tesla at least did this right and made the replacement very easy, and reasonably cheap. Rivian did not, at least of their Gen 1, it was a $1400 cost since the camera module was part of the front facia, so it all needed to be replaced.

Local installer did provide some Xpel remnant. 😁

Good thing I moved forward with this; saw a little chip in the lens. Ended up with 0.66" in diameter. Almost perfect to the edge but with enough 'play' in case it's not perfectly centered.

Very cool. How did you cut it? Scalpel/xacto type thing? Any visual distortion?

There are these covers on Amazon; despite it says they fit CT,I don’t know how they fit with tight overhang over the camera. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=CYBERTRUCK+font+cametcar+cover&crid=124I4AY68I57Q&sprefix=cybertruck+font+cametcar+cover,aps,113&ref=nb_sb_noss
I have the Amazon camera protectors on my current Cyberbeast. My 2024 FS AWD was absolutely rittled with battle scars on the forward facing camera after 32k miles. I put the camera protector on the new truck before leaving the lot. A definite must buy. Also threw one on my grandmas Model Y.

This is the one I bought. The figment isn’t exactly perfect. Especially near the top where it rubs against the plastic. When installing try you’re hardest to get a get grip above the camera. Mine gets a little water penetration from the automatic car wash but it’s usually dry by the time I get home. Still worth it in my opinion.

I’ve had success with this for windshield chips. No clue if it’ll work on camera glass but worth a try.

That’s a different camera. Front bumper camera is only $200, y’all cheap skates! 😝

j/p 😁
I noticed my CT was make an unknown spritzing sound when I would pull out from park lately. Similar to when the wiper would spritz but nothing visible was happening with the wiper. I’m assuming it’s automatically spritzing the front license plate camera since it appeared wet. When I looked at the camera glass in the sunlight and it appears to have

accumulated lots of tiny dings and chips from the impact of small road stuff and the CT is trying to clean it without success. I also tried using my finger nail to scrape it off but feels a little rough. Any ideas or options for replacing or protecting the camera’s glass lens cover?

I asked my service center about it and they said the lens can’t be replaced so they offered to replace the camera for $200 plus labor so around $260ish or so. My plan was to replace the camera and install the Amazon lens cover. However, they messeged me the night before my appointment and said the spritzing was due to the V14 update and will likely continue with a new camera. I asked Grok if this was correct and also given the current wear on the lens how long would it last before causing FSD issues, Grok’s response was the service center’s response was correct and the camera lens should last another 10K to 30k more miles so I cancelled my appointment and will try the lens covers from Amazon on my current camera to see if I can lengthen the life of the camera. Here’s a link to the Grok conversation: https://grok.com/share/bGVnYWN5_80711bdd-c5b8-4050-9ee4-dabf554f31a1

I got mine from Amazon as well and just filed the top and bottom down flat. That helped it fit the front camera much better.

I put a small square of this stuff across the bumper camera about 6 weeks ago. No optical problems. It's not quite as wide as the camera, IIRC, so I just centered it vertically up the middle.

Will it help? Dunno. Makes me feel better for $12, though.
