FSD 12.5.6.2 Update for Cybertruck next week

Today I was using FSD on the Interstate. I mostly stayed in the middle lane. I had to disengage it because it stayed so far to the left (in the middle lane) that I was getting awfully close to semis. I don't understand why it doesn't stay in the middle of the lane. Hopefully this is remedied soon, as well.

It's a safety and legal issue. I know they want FSD to be more human and not robotic, but I'm not doing 50 thru the school zone that's 20. I'll get a ticket about 1 min later any day of the week, always a cop.

Obvious compliance points for speed limits:

school zones

posted construction zones (maybe flow of traffic ok if they appear inactive; but where I am, they mostly have speed camera warnings that are active even if the construction zone isn't)

small towns (tickets are a revenue source)

parking lots

lots of cones around (please see the cones!)

very minor or narrow roads, esp. if winding, should if they don't have their own speed limit sign, be treated as no higher than the lowest speed limit on a connecting road; or there may be default rules that cover categories of roads if no sign is present

residential roads, esp. if there are any blind spots that a kid or pet might pop out from behind, should be taken no faster than the posted speed limit.

Speed limit or at least don't pass on bridges and in tunnels.

In adverse conditions (rain, snow, fog, lots of blowing leaves, etc), esp. at night, the speed limit should usually be a hard limit and there may even be a bias toward going slower - maybe not for rain on freeways depending on flow of traffic, but everywhere else, including ramps.

Some roads, like old US 66 some miles either side of Oatman, AZ (the town with the free roaming mules), you want to take slowly because it's narrow, lots of blind spots, drop on one side with no guard rail, and maybe hillside on the other, etc. Not to mention RV's going the other way, where someone may have to try to find a place to pull over to let the other by. Stretches of roads like that might not always be easy to categorize visually, they just need to be tagged on the map.

I may have missed some strict compliance conditions.

In general, for speed limits 35 or below, stick to it. Above 35, the lesser of 15% or 7 MPH over one should be able to get away with, other than in the above exceptions. 7 MPH is always what I heard would not be too obvious unless you were driving a red or yellow sports car, or had a tail light out, or might be thought suspicious, in which case an absolute compliance mode would be a wise choice. A Cybertruck isn't quite in the same mental category as a bright red sports car, but at highway speeds it's nearly the same if not better in performance, and it's way bigger and unusual enough to be obvious.

On freeway or major road that's a near freeway (like stretches of the old US route system or major state roads where lights are rare), flow of traffic is a good excuse IF conditions don't make that unsafe.

Right now, the behavior is nowhere NEAR that sophisticated. At the very least, posted areas with school zones at the top of the list, and areas with cones etc, need to be recognized. I'd say the simplest rule is those, plus err toward compliance unless flow of traffic is safer. (I'm thinking air traffic rules, where one can explicitly bust a rule IF it's a serious safety issue not to, but one had better be prepared to explain afterward.)

In one sense, a middle lane (esp. not the leftmost middle lane if there are more than three lanes) is obvious: less slowdowns from entrances/exits, in most areas the leftmost lane may be passing only, etc. A counter consideration is that in heavier traffic where there IS a decent shoulder, one can get boxed in to where there are less options in a middle lane. That's doubly a problem if it doesn't stay well centered in the lane and there are lots of semis. But shoulders aren't a get out of jail free pass, vehicles may be parked on them with or without blinkers, debris or bridge piers may be there, etc.

AFAIK, Maryland is unusual in that the leftmost lane is only a passing lane if posted, because there are a lot of left exits. But you will annoy people if you're in the leftmost lane and going slower than they want to. And DC is unusual (city roads now), because there's blanket no right on red (all the foreign drivers).

Remember, AI isn't rules so much as it is context. Presumably with a lot of (slow, expensive) human preprocessing, certain behavior modifying tags could be applied to certain contexts, which would only be useful if enough examples existed of those contexts to characterize them reasonably accurately.

I get the “degraded” message any time, rain or not, when I’m on a road with tall trees on either side. I think the AI is troubled by not seeing the sharp lines of buildings. Of course I happen to live in a forest.

Maybe the dense and tall vegetation is blocking the GPS signals from getting a sufficiently accurate signal lock.

Mine is refusing to go on green lights sometimes now. Before I never questioned if it would go but now I have to be ready to hit the pedal in case it doesn't.

What happened to cones and barrels in the display? They are gone leaving only grey shadow spots.

the vehicle still sees them, it’s just not rendering them to save the memory for other, more important things.

Joe Mode in a Tesla Cybertruck reduces the volume of chimes that are not related to safety issues. To enable Joe Mode, you can:

I drove from Vancouver, WA (Portland suburb) to Ellensburg (central Washington) through the rainy gorge and barely touched the steering wheel. Yes the truck said it was degraded but it kept going. Weird thing is the message said it was degraded, but the auto speed limit was speeding by 13 mph and following with a two second distance. You would think it would increase distance when it knows it is degraded.

I do think the degraded message is done more quietly in Joe mode. Not certain though, maybe I have just learned to ignore it

I hope Ashok realized he was replying to a cybertruck post. 12.5.5 branch only went to Cybertrucks. I'm hoping with 12.5.6.2 the trucks converge with the latest car releases.

I have quite a few non intervention drives but CT still has some what the f*** moments. My main issues is speed control and cutting sharp corners. Lane selection can be wonky on the highway but other than that I've been pretty happy considering how new it is. I admit I'm likely more impressed as I have been using FSD for 4 or 5 years. I think the CT is better than where we were a year ago on the cars.

I used to think autonomy was 5 to 10 years away but with the rapid reiteration enabled by the new data center I think we may actually be getting close.

drives so much better than last spring. I have had some tremendous drives and some where it does those wonky things
