Tesla started taking Cybertruck reservations in 2019. The first deliveries were in 2023, so early reservation holders had to wait for four years.

Telsa started taking Roadster reservations in 2020. Reservation holders are still waiting.

Tesla started taking Semi reservations in 2017. Reservation holders are still waiting.

So even if Tesla does start taking reservations for Optimus, delivery within two years is not necessarily guaranteed.
Way to state the bloody obvious. Tesla never guarantees delivery dates for any items under development. Nor would I expect them to.

It might seem obvious to you, and in fact it seems obvious to me too. But it didn't seem to be obvious to the post that I was actually responding to. That post implied that Tesla wouldn't take reservations for a product, unless it was going to be available within two years. We both know that this is an unrealistic assumption.

Nor would I expect them to.
We can both agree that no company should guarantee delivery dates for products that are still under development. However, I would go a step further, and suggest that maybe companies shouldn't take large advance deposits for such products either. Tesla has made a habit of doing so (see: Roadster, Semi, Range Extender). It's true that the deposits generate fast cash and hype, but it doesn't look good if those promised products are then delayed indefinitely or ultimately cancelled.

Because that has never resulted in slippery slope before. Jesus. Does anyone even watch sci-fi anymore? Am I the only nerd here? I’d expect not so amongst a bunch of Cybertruck owners.
I kid REM. I know you’re super nerdy too.
So then the question becomes, if you can experience joy within the matrix are you really enslaved?
Were you listening to me or were you looking at the lady in the red dress? Look again.

I don't see the problem taking paid reservations as long as we are talking about consenting adults and the deposits are fully refundable upon request.

If you don't want to make a deposit, don't make a deposit!

Who said there were guarantees?
You want to debate my post?
Did I write it as if it was a fact?
No.
I waited 2 years for a model 3 after my deposit.
A plan to launch a nd reality don't always align. So what!

Let's say two years to a basic Optimus "launch", but five years to a fairly robust set of house hold canned procedures and some simply learning abilities (eg "watch how I cut these onions, I'll have you cutting them from now on"). Right now today I'm sure the hardware is very nice, but we can't have 83 hours of training required for a 5 minute house hold procedure.

We're not quite up to the user-trainable quick and easy stage yet. This is relevant and recent release (and shows state of the art)

And it should be a real deposit, not $100 like the Cybertruck. Had to put $1k down on the Model 3 (which was supposed to begin at $35k and ended up at $49k for early reservation holders). It wasn't the delays, increased price or vehicle changes that bothered me about the CT, it was the low reservation that wildly misrepresented the actual demand.
