Would you have liked a spare tire as standard equipment or as a optional buy?

I know the CT does not come with a spare tire or even as a optional buy, but would you have wanted one if it was available?

What do you do when you get a flat and did not buy a spare tire yourself? Are you stuck just waiting for a tow and a tire?

My Hybrid came with a full size standard and I was glad of that as one of the few long drives to the grand kids we did get a flat and within 30 minutes we were up and running again. Once we got to Houston we just got the flat fixed and changed back to that original tire on that side.

It seems like Telsa could have fit a spare tire in a vehicle as large as the CT somewhere.

For me it is piece of mind that it brings on trips and just general driving.

Have a good weekend and be sure to keep sentry mode on. There are still plenty of nuts out there.

If they could have integrated it somehow so it's not just taking up 1/3 of the bed then yes. However, the lug nuts on the CT require an insane amount of torque ft lbs which you I don't think the average person would be able to generate with a regular tire iron. Most of us carry repair kits and compressors. I have the bacon strips kit (Mmmm bacon) roadside repair kit with a 120v compressor. It'll get me out of any jam.

You can buy an extra tire and rim if you choose by the way.

I would have liked an up side down spare mounted where the subtrunk is. Then I would have liked for there to be a removable compartment inside the wheel for tools , compressor jack and such. It would obviously be smaller than our subtrunk but it would have been a better use of space.

No, I think it’s been 40 years since I had a flat.
But do you off-road to relatively remote places in your off-road capable truck?
Absolutely agree we don’t need one in our model x

The question is the mounting location. A sneakier location would have been neat, since the lack of a proper stowage compartment means there is a sacrifice one way or another.

I actually love smugglers bay, great spot for sensitive things like propane tanks, toss it in and go. Oh sacrifice.
But to answer the question, having a spare is easily remedied

While waiting on my truck, I’ve bought a air compressor and tire patch repair kit. No that it will not fix all problems, but it will sure help out. The truck I drive now has no spare or at least one’s not the right size. Been driving it for four years with no problem. Think I will hope I’m lucky with the CT.

I get the hard to do the lug nuts for sure. But in our case AAA just started up the air compressor and we were off and running. I totally get some responses, especially you who do off-road on having a compressor on the trip and a tire.

I also understand putting it in the truck bed if you buy one but that defeats the purpose of the nice bed space. Just seems like they could have fit a spare somewhere in that large of truck if they really wanted to.

Like others I have not had a flat tire for years prior (7 or 8 years at least) but I then got 2 within a 5 month span about a year ago. So for me it is piece of mind.

Was just a general question and I am not a fan of the can air and sealant. Just a way for them manufactures to make a few extra dollars.

My real world, data. I've been driving 4x4 truck since 1979, the wife has been driving a while also. Truck wise, only needed a spare once in many years, but then I've plugged a handful of tires myself after picking up nails. The wife ran over something once so I had to go put a spare on, and once when I was driving her car picked up a nail and had to put on a spare. So in many years a handful of times..........Current 2024 truck has 19k miles, prior 2014 Tundra has 220k miles, 2001 Tundra before that had 310k miles........

Those of us who venture out into the boonie off-roads solo with our CTs MUST have a spare .... or be willing to take the GAMBLE of a tire failure in an area without cell service. I WISH that Tesla found a way to mount a spare under the vehicle like Ford did with their Lightening version of the F150. Yea, I get the notion that airless tires are destined to one day render flat tires obsolete ... but we ain't there yet. In the meantime, I look forward to some species of clever commercial metal rack or sling to lift my spare off the CT bed and be suspended as close to the tonneau cover as possible. Like you, I have seen the DIY slings ... but I have concerns about that weight causing damage in the long run ... especially in the rough and tumble. It is best for the care-free or rich guys to risk damaging their CTs 1st with that suspended spare tire unexpectedly shifting about ... so that we do not have to. Some sort of sturdy metal shelf MAY be the most stable solution

Adding a spare tire is like adding more batteries, sure we think it would add peace of mind, but Tesla obviously doesn't think it's worth the expense for those relatively rare edge cases either are actually NEEDED. I would tend to agree. I've gone out of my way to ensure my previous trucks had full size spare tires with them all the time, and have never actually used one. Used the spare on the family minivan twice in 12 years, sure it was convenient, but roadside or a patch kit would have gotten the job done as well.

I agree with OP’s concern and would like to have a spare for piece of mind except for the drawbacks. It occupies the same space, but how about carrying a spare tire, so if you do need to replace the damaged tire, can be done at any garage and it’s a lot easier to get it in and out of the truck bed.
