Hi All,

I currently own a 2023 Ford Lightning Long Range. I had ordered the Cybertruck the night it was announced, but I couldn't wait for its release and went with the Ford. I was also disappointed the range of the Cybertruck is not near the 500 mile range we were hoping for.

Anyway, 3 years and 95,000 miles later I am looking at selling my lightning and buying a Cybertruck. My question is; is the 325 mile range accurate? For example I know if I drive the lightning under 70mph, no jack rabbit starts, and it is at least 55 degrees out I can get 320 mile range. Over 70 it is 250-260.

What is you real world experience? Thanks

Yes. This was the first leg of my road trip through ohio and kentucky starting with 100%. Warm weather, average winds, up and down mountains, all highway using FSD going 70+ most of the time.

If you do the math, that's 318 mi range. Dead on to the estimate.

At 80-85 mph, I typically get around 190-210 miles of range. There's been like 4 or 5 range test at 70 mph. The worst was around 250 and the best was 301, temperature, wind and tire pressure matter. It's the same with all EVs, you loose range at speed as aero is a huge component.

So many variables to answer this question. From my perspective, being conservative on the throttle and targeting 70-75mph on the freeway, no problem hitting rated range; ~378Wh/mi. There is a ~225 round trip I often make and it takes 70% charge to do it (ex. 90%-->20% or 80%-->10%). However, noticed you're in Maryland. Cold weather will impact range.

I drive without ever worrying about range so here are some stats on a drive that was from 100% SoC to 12% SoC with a mean speed of 82.5 mph. Also a screenshot of the longest 17 drives. If you want some data on drives that are slower I can look for them but I don’t drive long distances that are not at 75+ mph, normally.

Edit: What I mean when I say ”without worrying about range” I mean I don’t care how far I can go on a single charge and never drive slow so I can get max range.

Edit: Realized this does not have the range on it. This data/graph was a 172 mile drive.

It doesn’t really matter unless your trip is 320 or less. If you are going to charge at a super charger, then It’ll be faster most of the time to go over 75 take a range hit, and charge. The range loss, is less than the time to “refill” that lost range. Basically, it’ll always be a shorter trip by going faster(unless you can make your destination without having to charge). Someone made a graph on here that showed the range loss + charging time delta vs total trip time, and unless your going faster than 95ish mph, it’ll be faster.

I track my highway/city driving and for highway driving, 75-80mph, I get 405Wh/mi, which is 304mi of range. For city, 35-55mph, I get 315Wh/mi, which is 390mi of range. I have the Core wheels with Pirelli tires, no covers.

As others have mentioned, I generally never think about maximum range, I think about shortest trip times, as there are enough superchargers that even a quick 5min stop is worth it, to drive faster and shorten a trip time. Driving slower to stretch out the range leads to slower trip times.

Our Foundation Series CT came with 340 mile range on the Core Wheels. Staying under 75 mph will confidently get you the promised range, or quite close. Assuming fairly flat terrain. See the attached photo for recent and lifetime results:

Hi,

I want to thank everyone for their responses it was very helpful. When I first had my 2015 Model S, I never got the 265 mile range. When I got the Lightning I would ay Ford's range is realistic if not understated. But from your info it appears Tesla is now more accurate too. Thanks again.

When we took delivery of our 2020 Model X the stated range or estimated % to the next stop when taking a road trip was off by as much as 12%, which was scary the first couple trips when I would leave for the next Supercharger with an estimated 15% arrival and show up with 4%. Since then the software does a much better job of understanding things like weather, temps, driving style, etc. and is accurate within 2-3% estimated arrival, from what I have seen. When we are on long trips I trust it to the point of leaving with an estimated 10% arrival SoC. If we get 30-50 miles away from the next charge and it still has us at 10% arrival I might put some more speed in to it as I know I will make it without worry.

I drive from Chesapeake Beach, MD to DC and back 5 days a week... Going up 4, over Suitland Parkway to the beltway, I average close to 328w/mile... so, in theory, given that travel pattern, I could get up to 375 miles of range. But, I charge every day when I get home so I never get down to low levels or enough to really see what she's capable of. (house backup doesn't work if I'm not plugged in. LOL)
