also for a rtt or cybertent - what do you the morning after you set up camp at the big meadows campground in shenandoah and then want to hike old rag?

this was always a question to me that was the nail in the coffin for cybertent, and a major thought about any rtt

so I was planning on spending about 5k anyway for a rack, rtt, and why not get an awning at that point. boy math im saving 400 lol
Am I missing something in context? If I’m just going with the RTT I’m traveling light and I just throw everything in the bed of the truck and go do what I wanna do for the day and then come back to that spot or a different one later when I’m ready.

Otherwise I’ve got my travel trailer with me and that one’s going to be at base camp along with whatever gear I wanna leave there and then if I wanted, I could camp or lounge at a completely different spot all day.

The benefit is it only takes 30 seconds to set up no matter how many times you do it per day.

What am I missing in terms of the downside or scenario that you are envisioning?

I freaking love my cybertent which everyone hates on.
Not only does it set up fast, but it feels solid in a storm and it sets up super cleanly without anything having to touch the ground.
And honestly, which of you guys with a rooftop tent of comparable size can say it fits in the top half of the back third of your vault with the tonneau closed? It’s an enormous engineering feat you all choose to overlook.
my Cybertruck still looks like a Cybertruck.
please don’t kill me, I know how unpopular this opinion is.

Super gamma! 😂🤣😂🤣

You may live this time, but you are on notice. I’ve modified the rankings to account for your very very poor taste:

any rtt
this tent
any traditional tent
scurvy
crabs
cybertent.

Ok. I’ll give you an example. Most of the time when I’m camping with family I don’t actually use the cybertent but we use our inflatable ground tent. Why? Not only because it’s bigger but because it’s cool to set up camp so one person can start making dinner and the other can run out and get some stuff from town or go scope out the area in the truck.
it also cool to be able to drive away in the truck while someone is still asleep and go fish, or check out a sunrise off-road trail or something like that.
no rooftop tent…or the cybertent can do that

In practical terms, the cybertent permanently lives in my vault because it really doesn’t affect its usability that much and acts as my “just in case” tent.
Ever considered camping somewhere when you weren’t actually planning to camp and packed/prepared your truck?
The cybertent lets you do that but doesn’t require that you permanently pay an aerodynamic penalty like the aftermarket options .

Yeah, I totally understand that’s why for me the RTT is a me and the dogs or me alone solution. With the family, I would definitely bring my tiger moth for a Basecamp as I mentioned above.

I don’t see it as a family solution so I just don’t think about it that way. at best it’s a 1+ one situation where the +1 is sporty and willing to wake up and get gone on the spur of the moment (this does not describe my wife - she’s down for almost anything but she’s not a morning person and definitely not going camping)!

So, if she’s coming, it’s going to be a lot more glamping than camping and if not I’m not bringing the tiger moth I would need to bring out one of our Gazelle’s as a home base for her.

Yeah, you’re perfectly describing why I got the Aeroblade. Yes, there is a permanent penalty but for me the calculus comes down to the reason I bought the truck was to have the truck bed available on the spur of the moment and taking up any of it with anything that can’t be quickly moved to the side like the bed divider just doesn’t compute.

So, the cybertent was never an option for me. Also, I don’t like that it’s basically no blackout and I’ve seen too many videos of people struggling with those stupid straps removing part of the tonneau cover and other little things that I know for a fact with irritate the living shit out of me!

Totally fair. This is my default empty bed just in case scenario. It’s a little dirty right now. Please pardon the grub.
I typically have the cybertent, power, the wave 2 and water (my rinsekit). I feel like that allows me to spontaneously settle wherever I want and that makes the whole experience of being outdoors less stressful and not “on the clock” for me.

I should’ve taken a picture but this set up would have kind of screwed me today because I needed to take the OEM roof rack from my FJ (along with the hardware that they removed to put on the new rack) to storage. I was able to finagle the two halves of the rack into the bed of the truck diagonally but the additional box they gave me had to hang over the tailgate and would not have worked with the cybertent installed.

Fair point. But I also have oem crossbars if push comes to shove.
It works for right now but I’m 90% sure I’m going to buy the second gen urander with the full length camper tent when it comes out.
I’m just kind of hoping it costs less than the Cybertruckco setup.

Good point about the crossbars. Had to give those up for the rack in the front. But for my items this would’ve required a fair amount of rigging as opposed to literally zero throw them in the truck bed and drive.

Yeah that new @Urander is pretty cool for what it is! It’s still, decidedly, not my cup of tea, but it looks really slick now.

So what do you like about the mars over the urander?

I just don’t like the look of a camper shell on pickup truck. Never have. Maybe PTSD from riding in the back of one when I was a kid (hated that experience). Also, I cannot stress enough how adverse I am to the idea of taking a truck bed and putting something on it that keeps you from putting tall things in it. The very thought causes me mental anguish.

With apologies to Jonny Cochrane, “If a fridge won’t fit, I’m not into that shit!”

I’ve never owned a truck before this and I guess the only time I’ve ever wanted one (before the CT) was when I needed to move a big TV or a refrigerator. Either that, or Dire Straits has led me down the wrong path in terms of what things people move.

Thule tax. Also, it’s almost as if you didn’t even watch the easy set up video. That’ll get your changing your tune! You’re gonna feel real silly after you see that!

Thule Tax I agree with, I actually did watch the setup video before I commented to see if there was anything special about it for the price. My conclusion is I'd rather buy a regular tent and stuff a pillow case with the remaining $4k to sleep on lol. That's just my opinion, but if it works for your purpose go for it and let us know how you like it.

No way man that was a joke! I still think it’s stupid, I was just pulling your leg! I’m sorry I should’ve used sarcasm font.
