It is the right decision financially. Costs too much in R&D to revamp the models for the amount they actually sell. Sucks to see them go from a nostalgia point of view. Now have to rest my hope in getting a Plaid Model 3 now... 🤞

What models will replace them? So just 3 models now? Y, 3, and CT?

Elon Musk just confirmed on the Q4 earnings call that Tesla is officially ending Model S and X production.

Not surprising. In my opinion- it is unlikely that tesla will continue to sell consumer vehicles by 2035.

if they do, it will be limited compared to their other business components.

Not long ago Elon was saying the future of the company was riding on FSD working. Now they sell less and less cars each year and no one is licensing FSD. The future looks grim, its riding on non-existent products coming to market. However I am sure the stock will continue to go up.

Nothing will. The large luxury sedan/SUV segment is one they simply won't be in. Not enough volume to justify the development costs. Long-term, consumer vehicle sales will be a smaller portion of the business. Still has to be for ~12m more vehicle sales... for reasons so a long tail.

At least they’re still keeping CT production going🙏
According to Cox, the Cybertruck sold slightly better than the S/X combined in the US during 2025, by 20,237 to 18,955.

But Cox only tracks US sales. Globally, the S/X are a lot more widely available than the CT. On a global basis, the S/X combined probably outsold the CT in 2025.

So if Tesla is discontinuing the S/X, it may not be a positive sign for the CT. On the other hand, Elon seems to think that the CT -- or something like it -- has a future as an autonomous delivery vehicle:

Hurts my heart but I don’t invest with that. They are trimming off all the losing service line fat and keeping the profitable stuff. They are capitalizing on the thing they have an edge on in the market (autonomy) and giving a concrete and optimistic timeline for Optimus which if you believe is the future of Tesla is fantastic news. Overall a good call I’d say.
