that’s the start of the arctic circle, it’s most southern point. A few hundred miles north are definitely polar bears and snowy capped mountains not far from the most southern point

Well.... I guess I don't for sure. But I hope it wasn't about you, because Gus was severely depressed to the point of being given Prozac, and then died of cancer (I think) in around 2013...



The song is over 20 years old now. To some of the fans on this side of the 49th parallel. at that time it was Gord Downie's metaphorical poke at the USA's declining importance on the world stage. Yes, even 20 years ago... But it could have simply been about the sad state of Gus' life, because Gord wrote songs that usually connected with a place or event.

Trivia: Did you know that The Hip released New Orleans is Sinking in '89 and it was banned by many radio stations for some time, after Hurricane Katrina? Thought to be in bad taste, even though it predated the hurricane by many years. ?‍
