Worked the night shift and was able to get a few hours rack in the back while my wife drove. Woke up refreshed and was able to finish the drive. Before all you Karen’s start chiming in about how dangerous it is, don’t do it if you think it’s too dangerous. I grew up in a time we’re used to sleep in the back and Pickup beds all the time. It was dark and cool and comfy.

hahaha, so true there are ppl out there who will bitch to you about it.

My first thought: his wife must've driven gently around turns so he doesn't fall off the air mattress. lol

Challenge accepted!

I grew up in that era too. I can’t say how many miles I clocked in the back of a pick up truck.

I can remember one specific trip in the back from El Camino in winter with my best friend from high school riding up to cut down Christmas trees. That was a round trip of about 260 miles.

Truck belonged to his mom’s boyfriend. He was an asshole, drove like an asshole, it was cold as fuck. Pretty sure I came home with pine needles in every orifice. That was about 1985. I was done riding in the back of trucks after that.

Later, my best friend [same guy] got his first mini-truck and slammed it (as one did in those days) joined a club (“Uptown Minis” if memory serves) and we endlessly cruised the Strip. Put a lot of girls in the back of that truck, literally “hauling ass.”

My wife likes to say, “when you know better, you do better.”

We did not know better in those days it was illegal then, just like it is now, but it’s just the way it was. We were teenage boys we didn’t really know better. But, Chuck [or whatever the fuck his name was] and Betty [Mike’s mom] surely knew better.

We put our dogs back there too. I’ve seen plenty of dead dogs on the road and watched at least one of those happen.

I don’t think any of that stuff is cool anymore and would never do it. I’m neither a Karen, nor the police or your dad, so I’m not gonna dare to tell you (or anyone) what to do. I know exactly how to mind my own fucking business.

But, since I’m not a pansy - I’m not gonna be stopped from saying what I wanna say, EVER.

This is dumb, [may be] illegal [check your state] and nobody should do it. If the worst happened, your wife could end up in jail for criminal negligence. I don’t think it’s worth it.

To quote Billy Joel; “the good ole days weren’t always good … .“

That said, do your thing dude. Keep keeping the faith!

*Edited to note some states are dumber than others. ?

As I was reading your response, I immediately began to think about my life insurance policy. I googled it and found this info.

  • Beneficiary's Role:
If the beneficiary (in this case, your wife) is found to be criminally negligent in your death and the insurance company can prove it, the policy payout may be denied.
Factors that Could Affect the Payout:

OMG! The life we now live in fear of lawyers and insurance companies. not sure if he had truck cover partly closed or not but say it was, how this different than laying down taking a nap in back of SUV and/or station wagon.

No reason to be rude. I am not telling you what to do. I honestly read your original post and thought it sounded like something I would do. Then I read the other post about it being potentially illegal. Then I thought about my family and my life insurance. Then I thought about every time insurance companies looked for an excuse to screw me. So I figured I would pass this along. I am not saying don't do it. Live your best life.

You don’t have to live your life in fear of lawyers and insurance companies. You can do whatever the fuck you want. It’s still America.

But, if what you’re suggesting is that people should be reckless and ignorant of potential consequences then, buddy, we’re just not going to agree on what freedom is or how life should be lived.

I got no issue with OP doing what he wants to do with his truck and life, I already said so. I’m nobody’s mama.

All that said, the answer to your question is: because lying down in a station wagon or an SUV inside the cabin that was designed for human occupancy and engineered to try and save you in the instance of a collision is completely different from putting yourself or somebody else in the bed of a truck which is, as we’ve seen in video posted earlier this week, designed to crumple and save the occupants of the cabin in the event of a collision.

It’s not more complicated than that.
