Every notice how quick the paint comes off the "black chrome" on automobile trim? Hint: It's painted SS. I have seen many SS surfaces lose their vinyl and painted decorations as easy as peeling the label off a long neck. SS is not a very good surface to paint or apply ANYTHING to and that's why I like it. Attempting to paint or apply any wrap material is like painting your shrubs pink cause you like pink, kind of ruins the whole concept of STAINLESS STEEL. Might as well stop by Sherwin Williams and pick up a gallon of latex and pour in on top of it, in the end you will get the same quality results.

I worked with paint on aircraft for 20 years, I have learned a few things about surfaces and what will and what won't bond with them and why somethings don't bond and I worked within that envelope otherwise you are inviting disaster.

The Cybertruck truck looks awesome in bare SS. I am leaving mine exactly how it comes out of the Giga TX assembly plant.
I go back and forth. I think I really need to live with it for a while. One thing I've thought about is a partial wrap to break up the big solid banks of silver. Maybe wrapping everything from the crease down. On Tesla's site, they have this image which is top lit and I really love the two tone effect. I might just try and duplicate this. A matte back bottom seems like it would set off with that super shiny top even more. Plus at night it would look like a little flying saucer hovering 3 feet off the ground.

Whatever I end up doing, the stainless is going to be a big part of it.

Also people get tired of the 'same old - same old'. Part of what drives the new vehicle market. Some may be satisfied with a new look via a new body wrap instead of buying a new vehicle. Cheap enough to do every couple years.
Wrapping your car every two years is far from cheap! I would rather have those thousands of dollars in my retirement account making money for me rather than invested in a pointless plastic covering for a super durable and beautiful metal body.

I agree, wrapping is the easy part, but keeping it on the Stainless Steel UNPAINTED surface will be nearly impossible. If you were to take a microscopic look at the surface of the SS and compare it to a painted Sheetmetal surface you would be amazed in the difference in the two. The SS still has all those nasty little furrows from the rolling process and prevents a good adhesion and the wrap material will peel OFF. You will have better luck wrapping the glass roof to block out the greenhouse look.

I don't want wrap on my Cybertruck but, make no mistake, the Cybertruck will be able to be wrapped and the wrap will stick more than adequately as long as the surface is properly prepped. And even with a painted car, surface prep is the most important step.

This Cybertruck Owner's Club forum seems to have an unusually high percentage of posts that are just plain incorrect. Yes, I know it's the Internet and am prepared for that but the ratios seem really high.

Surface prep is THE most important step in the coatings process. Please bring me up to speed on how one would prep cold rolled work hardened UN-painted stainless steel in order to get a good bond with the wrap material.

I am looking to get an artist friend to make a custom wrap design. She is looking for panel dimensions.
Can anyone point us to where we can get those to get started??
No one has seen a Beta or Production model, so we only have estimates.

So your only recourse are 3d models.

A good rinse with soap and water and heck, you could even use rubbing alcohol. It'll be easier than a painted car, that's for sure.

You would have to ask the manufacturer of whatever wrap you were using. Tesla hasn't even definitively told us what kind of finish the SS will have from the factory. But I'm absolutely positive wrap manufacturers would not say "Oh, no, there are no products available that will perform well on a Cybertruck." That's just not going to happen.

A Painted Surface Acts as the Ideal Foundation for Vinyl Wrap

Whether you are restoring an old car or don’t want to get into repainting your primary vehicle, it can be tempting to skip the paint requirement altogether and find nifty workarounds to it.

Sanding the bare metal surface or auto body to a highly smooth texture sounds like the most logical approach. But even when you have flattened the surface as much as possible, putting a PVC wrap over it may still bring out the grain of the metal against the final coating. This is also known as the “step” between your metal surface and your vinyl wrap.

To prevent this step from happening, it is essential that you perform a paint job over your bare metal surface. This ensures that your car wrap has nothing grainy underneath to accentuate through its material. When there’s a coat of paint between your car and your PVC wrap, the external coating can only highlight an exceptionally smooth surface.

Also please be aware that there may be problems of corrosion if the stainless steel is wrapped.
