yep. The first time I used whatever the OEM double sided tape was. One side got loose. Then I used 3m VHB. It got loose after a very very hot day here. Then I used T-REX double sided tape and that lasted the longest - about 4 months. Then the 80mph wind after 35 min decided to divorce us.
Then I got the bolt on.
when you say “I used whatever the OEM double sided tape was.” Do you mean the roll of black tape in the box? Because that is meant to cover the light upon install, not glue it down… they use a polymer resin i think not tape in the oe process

Hmmm. Fair point. I’m getting more and more unspooked by the minute. Thanks @JCERRN .

I did this the second time (second OEM lightbar) around (click below): I even purchased the exact primer recommended by Tesla and everything. .

Off Road Lightbar (Retrofit)

That one is on I80 in Indiana somewhere on the side of the road in a ditch.

Now I have the 3rd party bolt on (no adhesive or tape or anything - perfect fit).

With the lightbar DRL on.

Bummed to hear it happened with the VHB also.
No worries - I will never bash Tesla's products. It just didn't work for me for some reason.

I'm not angry or disappointed because I believe I ended up in a better place for me and my car shows.

Do you experience a lot of temperature extremes? Humidity?

Yes, I would say so. Chicago Il gets the extremes.

It must be the fact that I was trying to attach something to glass. Nothing else in the vehicle is attached to glass that experiences strong wind.
I mean for goodness sake - things attach too the castings with some of the strongest adhesive ever made to man - and that is relatively structurally indestructible to any environmental situations. .

I really appreciate this thread - lots of good information in here for someone who wants to tackle the install themselves.

@gtgarner - can you give more information about the 2 pictures you posted?

Is that the OEM light bar with an aftermarket bolt-on cover or full aftermarket light bar that comes with that cover? I'm thinking it's a full aftermarket, but it looks so clean and close (appearance-wise) to the OEM that I'm split 50/50 on which one it is. :D

EDIT/UPDATE - it looks like the above is the XKGlow light bar (https://store.xkglow.com/catalog/pr...esla-cybertruck-rgbw-chasing-drl-app-control/)... would appreciate you confirming.

My appologies.

Those pictures are from the 3rd (current) lightbar I installed.

1. OEM (Tesla)
2. OEM (Tesla) Following these explicit instructions to a tee. Off Road Lightbar (Retrofit)
3. Fully 3rd party bolt on light bar. XKmax Cybertruck Roof LED Off-road Light Bar w/ RGBW DRL | XKGLOW

The 3rd option is an absolute perfect fit - only made for the Cybertruck.

Appreciate the clarification - thank you! It helps me to understand what I'm looking at...so many of the aftermarket light bars are so similar and nuanced in their differences that it's difficult to keep track of them. The XKmax looks fantastic.

So I acquired one of the OEM beast bars not too long ago. It has been installed once before as evidenced by the black stuff on the bottom, but it’s otherwise basically new looking and works.
Clearly, Tesla will not be installing this for me. It will be a diy job.
I know this may be sacrilegious to some of you so I apologize in advance and please try exercise restraint with the “if Tesla can’t do it what makes you think you can?” or the old “you didn’t buy a beast so you don’t deserve the bar” type stuff.
I’ve been chastised for all that plenty already.
Constructively, can anyone suggest a method/procedure that’s likely to work for sticking it to my windshield? What are the pros and cons of things that have been tried?
What’s the best method?
VHB? Double sided clear tape? Silicon? Something else?

Currently my front-runner ideas are nano tape:

VHB (but I’m not sure which kind)
Leaning towards this:

And 3m windshield adhesive:

Please talk me into or out of one of these or propose another plan.

Use 3m adhesion promoter with 3m tape and you should be good to go. Clean dry surfaces and preferably warm.

Sowing of what VHB did you end up getting? I’m a little worried about your now having dug into these forums. Hahah

I understand. Mine is currently not going anywhere. It is covered in this tape and the windshield was treated with 3m adhesive promoter.
3M VHB Tape 5952, 2 in width x 5... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007Y7H63Q?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Definitely concerned given the things I’ve read too, but right now I’m continuing to be a guinea pig for what some of you consider a “ghetto” method of lightbar attachment.
I’m simple.

Oh forgive me I meant I was more worried about doing the glue right- I’m all about your method. Thank you!
