So I had an interesting experience driving downtown recently, I live on a hill and it’s roughly 2 miles to get downtown, as I was driving downtown, I noticed that my current energy usage was negative (regen battery charging) mostly cause I was going downhill. My kid works at a grocery store 2 miles down the hill from where we live, so I need to do an experiment where I drive to this grocery store and then come home and do that for about a week and see how close I get to zero energy usage. It would be interesting to post that I can drive to work every day and it would cost me zero in charging.

In theory, regen downhill will offset maybe 80% of the extra power it'll require you to drive back up the hill. Definitely better than a gas car that will coast down, but can't capture the excess energy to offset the drive back up. Won't net zero though, at best you'll be slightly less efficient than a drive of equal length and speed on a perfectly flat surface.

Ah yes, the perpetual motion machine. You will use a lot more going back uphill. Waaay better than fossil juice, but no free lunch.

I went skiing in West Virgina last year and when we left the resort it was about 45 minutes of driving down hill. After driving for 45 minutes I actually had 2% MORE battery than when I left. I was blown away! That was a cool experience.

My brother helped some hikers by driving them down the local mountains and at the bottom had significantly higher battery level than when he started up the mountain earlier in the day. So if you haul stuff down the hill and drive back up empty, "perpetual motion"!!

In 2021, a Canadian logging company ordered 3 Tesla semis figuring it would eliminate $200k per year in fuel costs. They are only heavy going down. Empty going up. Makes sense but never heard more about it.

maybe if you coast downhill much faster than when you cruising back uphill or the load was heavier downhill than when going back up. It's about balancing regen and juice pedal, you can play around with efficiency but nothing is free, not even freedom (got a bit political here).

It’ll even out to be the same as driving on flat ground. Your average is 534, if you are getting -100 going down, you’ll average about 634 going up. So your average will stay the same.
Imade a trip to the Rocky Mountain national park, in my ModelS. 70 miles uphill, and 70 miles back down. I left my house with 100%, was at 30% at the top, and pretty worried, thought I would have to hit the SC in Estes, but when I got there I wasariund 60% battery again. Got home with 35%, the it would have been driving that distance with no Mountain in the way.

There are mining companies that operate under the same principal, with 50+ ton BEV dump trucks. Harnessing the potential energy in the loads they're hauling downhill to generate enough charge to get back uphill while empty, essentially never needing to charge.

Just purchase a helicopter to airlift you to your descent point. Break even sometime never.
