Hey folks — wanted to share something I’ve found helpful with FSD v14, especially after Tesla removed the ability to adjust max speed via the scroll wheel.

Like many of you, I’ve found this change pretty frustrating in certain scenarios — freezing rain, snow, curvy canyon roads, low-visibility conditions, etc. There are times when you simply want FSD to cap out at a slower speed, and v14 doesn’t make that obvious anymore.

The workaround:
There is still a way to set a maximum speed cap that FSD will honor.

Key points:
  • You can set a max speed as low as 50 mph
  • You can also set it higher if desired
  • Once set, it’s honored in FSD and manual driving
  • It must be set or changed while in Park
  • You’ll need to unset/reset it if you want to change behavior later
Important caveats:
  • This is not a perfect solution
  • It’s not dynamic like the old scroll-wheel adjustment
  • It’s a bit clunky compared to previous versions

That said, it does give you back a degree of control that can make a big difference in adverse driving conditions.

I put together a short YouTube clip showing exactly where this setting lives and how to use it step-by-step:

👉 Video walkthrough:

Hopefully Tesla brings back proper on-the-fly speed control in a future update, but until then, this might help anyone who’s been missing that functionality.

Curious if others have been using this, or if you’ve found any better workarounds.

In my opinion this is potentially dangerous to limit top speed to a low number. Even in adverse conditions, there may be a need to go faster momentarily to avoid accidents or dangerous situations, and this would not let you do that.

In adverse conditions, when using FSD - it is better to switch to chill mode. In snow and in rain, FSD will limit speed if it senses adverse conditions. I've had it limit to 60mph when in a downpour - this was automatic and when I pressed the pedal to tell it to go faster, it would not.

Meanwhile, my CT after 14.2.2.2 doesn't want to speed at all. Which in NJ is a mortal sin and will get you shot. I have to keep hitting the accelerator in Hurry mode to get it above speed limit. Hurry was perfect when it would do 10 over and standard did 5 over.

I can attest to this as gospel. Also, it is customary to have public hanging for those doing the speed limit in the left lane.

Mad Max Mode just got me a speeding ticket last weekend. Cop said he paced me going upwards of 88mph (in a 65) he was “nice” enough to only ticket me going 10 over; said to lower my speed profile in the future.
funny enough I was thinking to myself how impressive mad max was at navigating through traffic and getting me to destination fast…then I saw the lights in my digital mirror 😅

I moved from Bergen County to the Fort Lauderdale area, people here speed like it’s the F1 circuit.

FSD will not go 88.

I reviewed the sentry footage while he pulled my license. now that it can show the MPH overlay I could see the truth, but I only recall seeing 84 mph at an glance and took his word for it. Regardless it was over the speed limit. My offset was relative +10mph if that even matters

Offset doesn't work with FSD, but that stinks.

What did work, sort of, was yielding to the emergency lights. It gracefully pulled to the right lanes to let the cop through. But as he stayed behind me and confirmed I was the target, it kept trying to yield to another lane and let him pass!
I’m sure it looked weird to him, with me going back and forth for a bit as if I was trying to shake him off my trail. 🥹

ironically after I went back onto the freeway, it started to rain and that limited FSD to 65mph due to poor visibility. Too little too late.

We had a simple, reliable scroll wheel to address ‘too fast’ or ‘too slow’- then the geniuses took it away, made speed management much more complicated and much more dangerous in the name of autonomy. Now we have to either annoy other drivers with slow or erratic speeds as the profiles change, or risk tickets. now we have to share hacks and work around to get a fraction of what we already had before the ‘revolutionary’ FSD14.

The speed profiles get more and more annoying with each update, requiring more driver interventions and work arounds.

Maybe it is revolutionary- it works pretty good on crowded highways, but I just can’t use it much anywhere else because of the horrendous AI speed management. It was a bad decision based on marketing to prematurely force a paradigm shift toward autonomy and ignore the complexity and variety of driving habits in each locality. No thank you, it just doesn’t work.

There’s a simple fix- just restore the speed control to the scroll wheel. Keep the speed profiles for those that want the illusion of ‘full’ autonomy- I just want to control the speed of my vehicle easily while it does the rest. I already had that- now it’s constant driver input to get it to go faster or slow down to legal speeds when needed. Bring back Speed control to the scroll wheel!

Thank you, I’ll try this in my neighborhood. I used FSD13 pretty much 100% of the time for almost a year in my neighborhood because I could easily set the speed. Since FSD14 taking away that option, I must repeatedly disengage because of improper speed management. My neighborhood is 25mph with a few spots at 15mph or 10mph, but the vehicle thinks it‘s all either 30mph or 45mph. I’ll try setting the max speed limit to 25 while I’m in my community, but I’ll have to remember to change that when I leave my neighborhood, and that’s a little inconvenient. It misses most if the posted signs even though they are clearly visible. It was SO MUCH BETTERVAND EASIER with the scroll wheel!

thanks I’ll try it. I used FSD13 almost 100% of the time in my 25mph community. FSD14 is useless there as the vehicle thinks the limits are 30mph or 45mph. Maybe this will work until some adult in Austin realizes how the real world works and restores the scroll wheel speed control.
