OK, you could look at it that way. Today, it's easy to think of the CT as a "high-cost, low-volume" option (like the S/X). But alternatively, the CT could be considered an attempt at a "low-cost, high-volume" option (like the 3/Y) that just failed to meet those goals.

But either way, the bottom line is that Tesla currently doesn't have a "low-cost, high-volume" EV pickup. And to be fair, neither does anyone else. But someone will fill the gap someday.
Tesla needs something to compete with the Rivian R2 & R3.

not really. no one really competes with Subaru. that’s the small end of the market. Tesla wants to be the Camry, Corolla and Rav4 - of BMW 3 series, 5 series, X3 and X5.

Interesting take. I think it may be more relevant to mass market appeal. The 3 and the y fill a niche similar to the one filled by the Camry and RAV4. Affordable, attainable, and easy to live with. Pragmatist may say, “it’s like I’m getting a low maintenance vehicle like a RAV4, but I’m also saving on gas and maintenance costs, and helping lower emissions, so a win win win in the long run” and that sells itself. A triangle shaped Tron vehicle from the future does not signal any of that. And I’m 110% ok with that, because I love this thing

Adding some different SS style lines would make for an easy exterior refresh. 2030 Cybertruck?

This new crease would also eliminate any door/mirror fluttering at high speeds since it’s no longer a flat panel.

This actually looks really cool.

I firmly believe Rivian isn’t going to be around much longer. They are basically Fisker 2.0.

In theory, Tesla already has something to compete with the R2: the Model Y. Both are marketed as mid-sized SUVs. It's true that the R2 has a more traditional, boxy, "SUV look", and it will likely perform better off-pavement. If Tesla wanted to respond, they could maybe develop a MY variant with a boxier shape and higher ground clearance. Somehow that doesn't seem like a vehicle that would appeal to Elon though.

I doubt that Tesla wants to compete in the compact SUV sector. But in Europe and Asia, there really would be a market for an EV SUV that is smaller than a Model 3, and the R3 could potentially fit the bill. Up to now, Rivians have only been available in North America, but they plan to export the R2 and R3.

It all depends on the R2 -- and they will be around long enough to start selling R2s.

If the R2 is a hit, Rivian lives. If not, Rivian dies, and VW scoops up the scraps. We will know a year from now.

I think a 2028-2029 refresh is likely with:
- updated battery cells = lower weight and longer range
- updated motors = more power and torque while being more efficient
- new tires = more efficient compound, like with the new Y
- maybe contrast color seats, a lighter interior color option

anything else, like the terrestrial armor, is coming via accessories and I expect to see more options here as time goes on
We’ve posted a wishlist of tweaks we like to see in a few refreshes:
(Without looking back, from memory a few):
-digital rearview mirror
-HUD
-rear camera washer
-dump empty bed mode
-frunk outlet
-New turning screen view UX, rear view plus turning view combined, side by side.
-obviously longer range, 400 miles, which a 4680 chem improvement is planned
-I’d like to see a split tailgate door like GM, providing a step
-open midgate for closed bed 8 foot loads
(This would also solve HVAC into the bed)
-heater near headlights for snow driving
-increased tow hitch vertical weight strength, allowing heavy hitch box
-ceiling or pillar grab bars for all four doors
-Auto door open on walk up, only certain driver/key profiles.
-AWD boost upgrade option, 0-60 4.1 sec becomes 3.5 sec.
-Racing level braking kit: Tesla orderable rotors, pad and fluid.
-Alert while in drive for anything moving within 36 inches of the truck.
-Basic autopilot.
-Fix FSD lane centering and speed/follow distance.
-Tesla accessory for Starlink in vehicle mount. Power ready, installed like light bar.
.-ALL camera's with 2-finger ZOOM option! Especially the rear/front ones. Reset back to normal after time and no touch.
-REAL Truck backup sounds!! You know, the one that goes BEEP, BEEP, BEEP... something even the older folks can hear

It’s actually the most perfect vehicle
I’m good if nothing improves
Except FSD

Hope Tesla Franz and Wes are reading

IMHO. With the tax breaks gone. Rivian is dead.

One extra thought, R2 can be a hit and they can still fail. It needs to be a profitable hit for the company to succeed.

I am pro American auto, I would love to see domestic manufacturing continue to be important in the sector. Rivian is an aspirational vehicle, most people I know who won't buy Tesla anymore are interested in Rivian or Chinese automobiles. The R2 is the A3, 3 series, 250 of the EV world. These vehicles are hits in middle class suburbs, R2 can fill this EV niche for a demographic Tesla no longer appeals to.

Actually, the loss of the $7,500 federal tax credit may not be a big blow to Rivian -- because 2025 Rivians weren't eligible for it anyway. Their battery sourcing didn't meet the requirements.

So Rivians have been selling without the benefit of the tax break all year long. If you were a potential Rivian customer, there was no incentive to buy before October 1, and there is no disincentive to buy after October 1. No tax break either way.

It's true that Rivians were eligible for the lease credit, so Rivian leases are affected by the loss of the tax break. But not Rivian sales.

Yeah, I mostly agree, Tesla will do small upgrades as tech gradually improves, but the actual appearance is too iconic to touch for many years. It's a great truck as-is, so no compelling reason to do anything but remove cost without getting rid of the signature exoskeleton that is nearly impossible to damage without actually getting in a real accident.
