I think it’s a very cool statue, but as a company I feel like they need to be maybe a little bit less schizophrenic. Does he hate California or does he love it?

This is just one of the many reasons why I don’t need to know his personal opinions. It could just be a cool statue without any weird hypocritical/incongruous feeling baggage.

I hope that he has finally realized the deleterious effect that these various indulgences have had on the business and keeps it dialed way back.

The relationship between Tesla and California is complicated. I think it would be fair to say that the relationship is still strong -- but not as strong as it used to be, and maybe weakening a little bit more every quarter.

Tesla was founded in California, but HQ moved to Texas in 2021, and a lot of employees must have moved out of CA at that time. On the other hand, Tesla still has plenty of employees here; Grok estimated 42,000 in CA as of 2024, vs. only 21,000 in TX as of early 2025.

Production at the Fremont factory peaked in 2023, and has been falling as Austin production has increased. On the other hand, the Fremont factory still produces around 2.5x as many Tesla vehicles as the Austin factory.

According to the latest CNCDA report, Tesla was the #3 auto brand in California during the first three quarters of 2025, with 9.8% market share -- behind Toyota (17.4%) and Honda (10.9%), but ahead of Ford (7.7%) and Chevy (6.5%).

So for the first three quarters of 2025, about 1 out of 10 vehicles sold in CA was a Tesla. That's impressive -- except when you compare it to historical results. In 2023, Tesla was the #2 auto brand with 13.0% market share; about 1 out of 8 vehicles sold in CA was a Tesla.

So Tesla has lost ground in CA since 2023. In fact, starting in 4Q 2023, Tesla sales in CA have dropped every quarter on a Year-over-Year basis: 4Q 2023 was lower than 4Q 2022, then 1Q 2024 was lower than 1Q 2023, and so on. Most recently, 3Q 2025 was lower than 3Q 2024, even with people rushing to buy EVs before the expiration of the tax credit.

One point of interest in the state-specific data: through 3Q 2025, the Cybertruck is the best-selling EV pickup in California, even though the F-150 Lightning is ahead nationally.
