Honestly.. To rent it out and have a fun toy that others pay for. It’s working out quite nicely ??
Via Turo? Curious about your rental rate and % percent of available to rent and actually rented. Thanx in advance.

I needed/wanted a replacement for our 14-year old F-150 and was tired of being tied to gas pumps still, and the 36-gallon tank. I don't like smelling stinky trucks on a fresh, crisp morning either, so I knew it had to be electric. Plus, I wanted better driving dynamics.

The tiny bed in the Rivian is a bad joke for my needs. The F-150 Lightning? I could never live with the bad software, it would drive me crazy and make me hate the truck. And then there's the driving dynamics - better than my 2010 F-150, but that's not saying enough. And the shorter bed of the lightning, with wheel well intruding into the load space is a negative. The Hummer? You have to be kidding! Again, bad software and tiny bed just eliminates it right off the bat. The Silverado? Um, no. I actually use my trucks off-road and that thing is a pig. Even the Trail Boss wouldn't serve my needs and it won't be available until 2025-2026 even if I did think it would work. And again, the software would just make me hate my truck. All of these "trucks" are a bad value (at least for me), even the ones that cost less than Cybertruck Foundation Edition.

The Cybertruck was the only one I trusted that I wouldn't hate the software and driving dynamics, and that met all of my needs. Sure, I could have compromised and made any of the above trucks work, just not very well or very enjoyably. After taking delivery, I was blown away with how much better it was than I thought it would be. The clumsy way that off-road mode is activated is my biggest gripe. I'm 99% sure this will be fixed within a year or two. The likely problem is that the best programmers and UI interface designers have no real experience using a truck off-road. That and the off-road modes are a recently added feature and it just got kludged onto the existing UI. In time they will refine it to perfection. At least the off-road performance is better than any other pickup truck (IMO), even if the UI to turn it on is clumsy.

It’s a good daily driver and is the center of attention at Cars/Coffee, I love it!

From a $$$ standpoint, it no longer made sense to maintain my Ram PowerWagon.

It was a great truck, but CT is far superior.

  • Electric
  • Unique (I live in the south where every pickup looks the same to me)
  • Tech features - I'm a tech nerd by trade so the "cool" factor is on a whole other level. And getting software updates is like getting a new vehicle. In 5 years, this truck will do so many more things than it can today without having to buy a new truck.
  • Powershare - Been wanting a battery back up for the home and now I'll have it

I bought it primarily because I support a company that innovates in a space that has largely been dead to innovation for years. After getting my AWD CT I realized the truck is so much more than I thought it would be. I’m impressed and very happy about my purchase.

I've always preferred unique looking vehicles and this fit the bill. Combine that with the fact that it's a truck, electric and some day will drive itself. It was a simple decision for me. It doesn't matter to me that it's a Tesla. I probably would've bought the CyberTruck from any manufacturer.

Ordered it 4 years ago because it reminded me of the Halo Warthog and DeLorean.
Upgraded to the Cyberbeast (and ordered Tesla Solar and Powerwall) because Elon is one of the few billionaires doing good things with his wealth.

Assumptions / situational data:
  • I drive my trucks a lot
  • I tend to drive them to 200k miles+
  • I have plenty of solar that runs our whole homestead, including wells, AC, furnaces, and even water heaters. Yes, plural. Based on my model 3 commuter, 93% of my energy over 150k miles is $0.
  • I load up my trucks often with mulch and other loads that require a cover at high speeds.
  • I tow heavy (7-9k ish) loads often and short distances (~70 miles one way)
  • My trucks tend to look like they've been hit with baseball bats after about 50k miles
My needs/wants:
  • Decent towing
  • I'd like it to not dent by looking at it funny... That gets old with aluminum trucks
  • Comfort for family of 4+dog.
  • Something my 86 y/o Grandma can get in and out of.
  • 4x4 with at least good off road capabilities. We don't live on pavement or near a city (CT is overkill for my off-road needs, but it's been fun to have!)
  • I used to have to take a detour to fill up, now I consider it a requirement to be able to leave home "full"

The math:
Over 200k miles of use I expect:
Gas = $4.50/1g x (200,000 miles / 15 mpg) = $60,000
$60,000 x 92% (expected solar charging) = $55,200

$100,000 - $55,200 = $44,800 expected long term cost

It's a no brainer for me. If it wasn't the CT it would have been a maxed out lightning, but I was not looking forward to the support on them.

I bought it simply because this is the only truck that can drive by itself. There are plenty of good trucks with ...meh software. There are a couple of trucks with ...good software. There's only one truck with FSD. For me, it's a HUGE thing because other metrics are comparable. Steer by wire is a great feature as well, but it's not what particularly sold me the Cybertruck.

The reality is the market is full of good trucks. And it’s fine.
