To be fair, we don't know they can build an EV truck for $27K (and neither do they). They are still talking to suppliers. You can bet the tires they showed will not be included for $27K.

Personally, I don't like vehicles built to a low price point, even if you can add a bunch of doo-dads to it. Because you end up with a cheap truck with a bunch of expensive doo-dads stuck on. And that may be their business plan. Sell the truck at a loss and hope they make up for it by selling over-priced accessories. But my best guess is the truck will be late and over-price. Of course they are not named Tesla so there won't be an army of detractors rubbing their noses in the fact that they missed their forecast date and price.

I do like that they plan to put the charge port in the correct location (and it's not CCS). That is an example of good decision making.

Why get this instead of a maverick?
Ford just raised the prices on all Mexican-made vehicles, including the Maverick. The MSRP for a base XL Maverick, with zero options but including all fees, is now $30,535. And that assumes no dealer markups (which have been common with the Maverick).

If the Slate comes in at under $20,000 with the $7,500 tax credit, the price difference is obvious. But even if the tax credit goes away, the Slate could be less expensive. And there will be no dealer markups.

It's true that most people will want to add options to the Slate, and this will certainly raise the price. But the same could be true of the Maverick. For example, the towing capacity of the Slate is pretty pathetic at 1,000 lbs -- but a base Maverick (without optional AWD and the tow package) isn't much more useful at 2,000 lbs.

We placed a reservation for two of them. One for a rental in Wisconsin that has enough demand after talking to the 5 long term renters we have. The other is for our farm. We like it better than an ATV solution.

Oh man! The CEO is even more in a fantasy dream-world than I first thought if she thinks they will hit profitability in 2017, especially considering it was said in the context of Tesla taking 17 years to reach profitability (because that makes clear they are not talking about gross profitability but net profitability). Pure fantasy, and it makes it impossible for me to take anything she says seriously.

These people are either seriously deluded or else they are fraudsters.

Tesla took the path of including almost everything in every car to simplify production. Slate is taking the opposite path of including NOTHING but absolute essentials. The reason this is a losing strategy is because eliminating the center screen, the stereo, the power windows and seats, the navigation, the heated seats, the power mirrors, the proximity lock/unlock, etc. will only save about $3,000 in production costs but it makes the vehicle a LOT less desirable. More importantly, it shows how unrealistic their announced price point is.

I wonder when reality will hit the management team and they realize they are not going to meet their timelines, price points or economic projections? They should already know this but they are living out a fantasy.

Watch and see.

No one can do it ever again. All future car companies will never be able to succeed. Why even bother trying. The love of Tesla is shared by many, but calling these workers deluded and fraudsters. Really? I guess no one can ever try again.
