We just completed a tow from SF to SLC with a 12x6 trailer and wanted to share some numbers.

On the first charge, we cruised at 55 mph using cruise control. We had a partial tailwind of about 13 mph heading east, with an elevation gain of roughly 1,100 ft. The trip totaled 141.7 miles, consuming 80.8 kWh at an average of 569.1 Wh/mi.

For the second charge, we towed all the way across the Sierra Nevada. At the top of the climb, we peaked at 998.6 Wh/mi, and by the time we reached the Supercharger in Fernley, the average dropped to 568.6 Wh/mi. Total energy used was 74.4 kWh over 130.8 miles.

How well did the trip planner track actual usage?

Full fsd how can you use cruise. When I pull my trailer , the auto pilot will not go on. Also you lose about 2/3 of your charge averaging about 100 miles for full charge . This is towing a 14x7 enclosed trailer

In the Autopilot screen, select TACC instead of FSD.
If you have all terrain tires, air up to 65 psi.

Indeed per manual instructions.

Tire Pressures when Towing
When towing a trailer, tire pressures must be adjusted to accommodate the additional load. Keep tires inflated to the pressures shown below (these pressures override the pressures that are provided on the Tire and Loading information label – see Vehicle Loading):
TiresCold Tire Inflation Pressure
20" All Season50 psi
20" All Terrain65 psi

Nice write up! Where did you go from Fernly?

We just hauled over two tons of stuff from Twin Falls ID to San Jose CA. UHaul 12x6 Cyberbeast.

Charged to 95% at Twin where we picked up and loaded the trailer, was going to use slow charger at Jackpot. But it was down.
-5% estimate for arrival at Wells. So we dropped the trailer, made back to Twin easily, charged to 100% (base jumpers at the bridge were very entertaining).
Back to Jackpot, hooked up, made Wells easily.
Rest of the trip was uneventful at 60-65 mph. I was glad I thought of heading back, actually was faster than slow charging for 4 hours by a little bit.

Your point about tire pressure is well taken. Our trailer was at 55 PSI, not 65 and the CT was at about the same. Going to 65 in all tires gave us a bit better efficiency. Sorry, I did not do your documentation.

Did you route plan? Tesla had us going all the way down through Barstow and back up. Maybe it knew we could not make the Twin to Wells trip.

Weight not as important as shape when at 60+mph- but both matter. Wouldn’t it be neat if we could find a way to have more range? 130 miles for towing (and rare pull through chargers) makes this such a tough situation to consider this a tow vehicle.

It went pretty well! We started at 92%, and it recommended staying under 69 mph to reach the next Supercharger with more than 9%.

We set cruise control to 65 mph and actually arrived with 30% left.

So next time, we could probably charge to just 80% and still arrive with around 18%, which would cut down at least 10 minutes on charging time.

Could also tweak the dimensions/ weight to get a better estimate (more useful for trailers you own)
