My MX is getting a lemon law buyback next week, so I need to order a new Tesla quite soon. The MX repair issue wasn’t major but I’ve heard it’s present in some percentage of Xs, and I don’t really want to repeat all those service visits.

A new MX is basically the same price as the CT except it qualifies for the tax credit so it’s $7500 less. Hopefully CT qualifies for the credit sometime soon, but even if it doesn’t, I’d prefer the CT despite the higher price.

But then there’s my family, who dont want to be seen riding around in a CT. My wife called it the ‘monster truck’. I agree that’s it’s jarring/kind of ugly but I kind of like it for that reason. I’m not looking forward to all that extra length when parking, but I can probably deal with it.

I know the CT has more new tech and generally better driving dynamics. Anyone with experience in both cars care to chime in?

What year was your X?

I had 202O Performance Model X Raven w/ludicrous (pre plaid labels) and even unlimited super charging.. Loved every minute with it and only maintenance ever was a new set of wheels. The whole family was bummed to see it go including myself. That is, right up until the point I drove off the lot with the CT cyberbeast.

It was nice having a six seater and a couple of more choices when parking (obvious size difference) and the motors were basically stealth mode vs CT. But again have not thought of it at all. My wife was also a CT detractor and planned to get her own X (waiting for a refresh) but had now decided to get her own CT.

The only thing I absolutely miss are the auto presenting doors. I think that went away on later X, but walking up and having the doors open and close fully on their own was awesome. CT is the polar opposite.

The CT providers a lot more flexibility for use. Never had a truck before and will say having the bed as an option is great. It also handles amazingly. Took a little getting used to with steer by wire and four wheel turning, but it's great.

If you’re buying a 5 seat MX because you only have 1-2 kids then I can absolutely see the appeal of repurchasing it vs the Cybertruck. If you have 3 kids I hope you have another 3rd row vehicle or otherwise get the CT if you want them 3 across (because it’s wider) but as a person who has 3 boys.. having them sit 3 across is inviting trouble so I refuse to have our main family hauler be a 3 across two row vehicle.

I had a MX for 3 months on a long term loaner and it was the 6-seat configuration and it was one of the best vehicles I had ever had for family hauling. Auto present doors, school pickup line with the falcon doors was super easy. Where we are at in the country the MX is also pretty rare, so while yes you see a M3 and MY every 4 seconds you may not see a MX all but once a month so for that reason it was also kind of nice. Also, I had a MS forever and I’ll mention having the dash screen is joyous. I don’t mind not having it in the CT because the screen is so huge but I can’t say the same for the MY. If you really like that main screen, it’s a good reason to go MX in my opinion as well.

I think your wife will come to love the CT, so if you’re just worried about the looks, I can promise you that will fade away by the 99th time someone compliments you on it or wonders if you’re Batman. I’m a vanity truck guy through and through tho as someone who has owned Raptors for 10+ years and in 1 week of Cyberbeast ownership I can tell you this has been “my baby” more than any other vehicle. Also don’t worry about the trucks length in parking.. it is gigantic, but it’s pretty easy to park.

I was going to say the MX will get better miles/kWh but looked it up and was surprised to see it is about the same as the CT. It is pretty amazing that Tesla was able to get the same economy in a full sized truck as the X. Given that, the extra utility, and how much your kids will love it, get the CT. Do it for the children!

The MX is a better value if you need to sit more than 5 (with the 6 or 7 seater) and is faster/quicker, but other than that I think the CT is smoother, about the same range, newer tech, quieter, higher off the ground, better sound system, less crazy parts that can break, more uses with power/plugs, etc.

I had an X and a Y, traded the old X for a refresh MS, then was going to trade the MY for a MXPlaid until the CT invite came. The only thing I've ever had which resembled a regret was when my parents were here and we had to take 2 vehicles. With the X, they would have been fine to fit.

Other than that I think owning and using a CT is better in every way.

I own both, the MX plaid and the CB.
Before the CB the MX plaid was the family car. Just like everyone else has said, the auto doors, 3rd row (6 seat configuration), and finally the audio separation when the kids are watching movies or playing games.
However once I got the CB the second day we took it on a 500 mile road trip that all changed. My 15 year old daughter first said she would never be caught dead in the CB, well after the first few hundred miles she said she forgot she was in the CB and she was actually enjoying the drive. She likes how much taller she was and could look and not get her view blocked by other cars.
Her only complaint was the seats didn’t recline at all. She said at least the X could go back some. Also she wanted the games working on the back TV. I didn’t know it didn’t have games. Guess it’s like the X in a few years an update will get them back there.
The MX now just sits in the driveway waiting for my wife to drive it to work. Any other time everyone just walks to the CB.
You can’t go wrong with either car. But for me without a question get the CB!

I own and enjoy both. If I had to pick for the kids I’d buy the CT. For the wife, an X. For me, the CT.

I'm sure I'll get berated for this, but maybe in this particular instance neither one of those is exactly what you want? There's nothing wrong with considering other EVs. Rivian R1S would be my choice if I was in your position, where I could use the space of a Model X or more, but didn't want the length of the CyberTruck and the family didn't want the look. But there's also all the others like BMW, Mercedes, Genesis, etc.

Nothing wrong with at least checking them out with the family and then making a decision. Maybe they'll come around to the CT when they realize all it offers. Maybe not. But it's good for them to see and be educated to all the options available.

I’m kinda in the same boat as you w the MX-what’s the cause of the buyback?

If you have YouTube premium and you're signed in, you should be able to search "Playables" in the YouTube app and play some games. I've never tested it on the rear display but it works for the front one for sure.

In fairness I have only ever test driven the MX. I have had my CB for a couple of months now and put thousands of miles on it. I agree with most of the sentiment here 4 people I'd go with the CT. Just ask yourself what you will be doing with the vehicle 80% of the time. Don't ruin the 80% trying to satisfy the 20%.

As for the looks and the price I will tell you now that you need to budget an extra $2000-$7000 to get it wrapped. Most folks, including my wife, hated the looks from the factory. That all changed once I got it wrapped. I loved the steel look and feel at first, but it gets dirty fast and is hard to keep clean. I got mine wrapped with a ceramic coating and it's very easy to keep clean now and always looks great. I also had a legal tint on the front windshield for UV protection. I'd highly recommend this to take care of your dash long term. Also, it keeps the heat down and saves battery life. I would also budget another $1000 for add ons that you will eventually buy because you will want/need them, not the least of which being storage compartments, tie downs and hitch (Because it's a truck and you can't do truck things without the right equipment) and other things based on your personal taste. I have discovered a whole bunch of stuff that I swore I didn't need until I actually needed them. Most recently, mud flaps. Because even just the rain water on the roads splash up on to your doors quite a bit.

So the prices are similar, but keep in mind Tesla is selling you a "platform" to work off of and they expect you to customize it to your personal needs. Out of the factory it's pretty useless as a truck and performs only modestly as a family vehicle. The mods and add ons change all of that and turns it in to a very capable machine. That's why the prices are similar on the face, but down the road the CT is more expensive.

Having said all of that I have 0 regrets about buying it. Absolutely love driving my CB. I don't usually like driving, but I actually can say that I love driving my CB. It's a lot of FUN! I'd buy it all over again just to experience it all again in a heartbeat. I can't say I had the same excitement about driving the MX.

As for the size, don't let it bother you. You will be surprised how easy it is to maneuver and once you grasp the camera system and how the wheels turn you will be parking like a pro. FYI, my wife who only drives small 2 door cars made the most appropriate analogy about driving the CB. She said, "It's like driving an electric golf cart." She had no problems handling it and was really terrified to drive it before she actually got behind the wheel. Now she drives it to show her friends.

I have MX and CT! As an old lady I drive CT almost every day while MX is asleep majority of the time. Right before FSD release in CT, I took MX for a long distance trip and back to sleep she went. While I love my ‘24 MX, I bought it because dear husband’s constant complaints about getting in and out of my MSLR, driving CT is a whole different ballgame as in turns, parking and overall vision of the roads is far superior. When FSD was released, it didn’t quite compared to MX’s FSD but with all the latest OTA it’s getting much better. Take your wife for a demo drive for a day and see what she thinks afterwards.

CT is so fun to drive the tech steer by wire and 4 wheel steering is worth picking it over the MX.

its a ‘23. I also owned a ‘22 X for six months and it was also in and out of service for various minor annoyances.

the ‘23 has a steering column alignment problem which has required 4 visits and each service visit averaged 7–10 days, hence the lemon buyback. It’s been a quite a process but ultimately they are paying me back all my cost, including loan interest, so I’m not complaining. The tech told me that the column is being redesigned in house because this problem arises in a small number of cars, but he had no idea of the timeframe and of course his information could be wrong altogether.

Repair history is a reason to lean away from another X but the current tax credit situation is a reason to get another one, especially if Trump wins next week- then it seems like it’s days are numbered.

BTW, the X still has auto-present doors and they’re great, but not a deciding factor for me.

I use fsd almost all the time, so other brands are a no go. My house has power walls also, so it’s already set up for PowerShare, so that’s another reason for me to go with the CT.

The R1S looks nice and the price is ok relative to Tesla, but the financials of the company are too alarming for me personally to own one of their cars.
