Dang! Did you hunt one of the babies?! 😭 Or did you choose wisely so that you didn't have to order a field crane to pick him up lmao

She was a 6 year old female. The only part of her going into the trash is the spinal cord. Literally everything else will be used. She did not die in vain.

Oh don't misunderstand me, I love game hunting. I just looked on the smaller side for Bison, but female explains that. Probably better meat anyway.

We took our FS Beast, Fluffy, to our annual Bison hunt at a local ranch. Is there anything the Cybertruck can’t do?

So as I understand. It bison are fairly unique in that both the pleural cavities are connected without a mediastinum. So that means a shot on either side of the thorax collapses both lungs and is likely fatal. Is that accurate?

No, that's not entirely accurate, though it's a widespread belief rooted in a long-standing anecdote.

The idea that American bison have fully connected pleural cavities—without any mediastinal separation, forming a single shared space for both lungs—stems from a legend that Native Americans could kill a bison with one arrow or spear to the chest, causing both lungs to collapse simultaneously (bilateral pneumothorax).

In reality, a 2021 veterinary study dissected eight bison and found that only four had fenestrations (small holes) in the mediastinum allowing communication between the left and right pleural cavities. The other four had no such openings, meaning their pleural cavities were separate like in most mammals (including humans, cattle, and deer). Earlier observations by a veterinarian suggested about 50% of bison have these gross interpleural connections.

So, bison do not uniquely or universally lack a mediastinum—it's variable, with some individuals having partial communications (often in the posterior mediastinum). This is not exclusive to bison; similar incomplete or fenestrated mediastina occur in other animals like dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and mice.

Thank you. It’s always seemed like a bit of an evolutionary miss to me. Happy to know it’s not universally the case.

A bison hunt for meat, cape and skull (I prefer European mount) is a goal for this household. I love bison meat. Sous vide is the way to go for the non-ground meat cuts. I love the animal, so suited for the weather extremes of North America.

What do you do with the cape?

Agreed! Sous vide followed by a 30 second sear on each side in a high-heat cast iron is the only way I cook my elk steaks.

We dropped off the hide at a tannery yesterday. Looks like it’ll take about a year but I’m expecting an extremely warm bedspread 😀

The meat is indeed delicious, one of my favorites is the bones. Marrow for roasting into meat butter and all the other bones for broth and dog toys.

I've shot both bison and elk in managed "hunts". There actually no such thing as a bison hunt anymore, at least in Wyoming in the Yellowstone/Teton region. They stand around, you pick one, shoot it. My elk "hunt" was on the national elk refuge in Jackson Hole. Same deal. Drive out to the herd, harvest, leave.
