I was fortunate enough to purchase a @Urander bed rack during their black Friday sales event. After placing the order, I then realized that I would also need to have my back ordered OEM light bar also installed (before I could actually install the rack). Otherwise, I would then need to partially disassemble the rack to allow for the power connection on the light bar to the truck.

I reached out to my local Tesla service center via my app, explained the issue I created. They were very understanding and were actually able to order in the light bar right away for me. The timing worked out great, the rack arrived 2 days before my service appointment. Just a day after my SC appointment, I installed the rack.

Here is the result. I can confirm the Urander bed rack is completely compatible to an installed OEM light bar, and I think that they actually look really great together. Moral of the story, if you still have a back ordered OEM light bar, order a Urander bed rack! (Just kidding...kinda...and no, I am not sponsored by anyone).

Nice! How’s your wind noise at 50+ mph?

I noticed hardly any difference at all (if any). With it installed, I’m hyper aware of any noise now, as I was really anticipating it to increase to very noticeable levels. At first, I purposely turned off any media and really listened for it, and I honestly really couldn’t tell if it’s louder now or not. I’m not sure if it’s due to the trucks built in active noise cancellation, the very good cabin insulation and advertised acoustic glass it comes with, or if it is just not very noisy. I was expecting noticeably more, but I don’t really notice a difference. With the media playing, I hear literally nothing at all (but the media), and wind is only just perceptible to very slight, with no media playing (and that’s with me really trying to hear the wind). So very happy with it (for whichever reason that it’s possibly more reduced than I expected). I’ve actually also been getting a lot of compliments now on its looks with it added, with people specifically mentioning it.

This is so cool...I could do motorcycle track days and not have to bring an EZ-up.
Except for those windy days.. willow springs near me used to get pretty strong winds.

How difficult would it be to install the OEM lightbar if the Urander bed rack is already installed?

As you’re likely aware, to connect the light bar to power, the SC tech has to remove the factory facia on the right top side of the truck (this is where access to the 48 volt power connection is).

When installed, the rack completely covers this fascia. I’d say that you would have two options. The first being the most practical.

1st, Just remove the entire assembled rack. You would remove all 8 bolts that tie the assembled rack into the hard point mounts on the truck (Urander provides a mount adapter that mounts to the actual factory hard points with two bolts, you would leave that mount adapter in place, and just detach the rack from these Urander hard point mounts by removing all 8 of the Urander provided bolts). Once all 8 bolts are removed, you could then just carefully lift the entire assembled rack off the truck. You would likely need a few people for this to ensure it comes up and off evenly (and can then be walked back off the rear of the truck and set down without dinging the top of the truck). Unless you have another way to potentially lift off truck (I.e. forklift or similar that the rack could be strapped to). Because the Urander hard points are left on, when putting the rack back on, all the bolts should line up pretty easily.

The 2nd option would be to unbolt and disassemble just that entire front right corner of the of the rack while still on the truck. I think this is likely possible, but you would likely get some scraped knuckles and it would be a real pain. You would have to remove the front deflector, half of the right side main rail, multiple cross bars, and a couple of the right side MOLLE panels. Then drive the truck to the SC with a lot of the rack removed. It’s pretty robust when bolted together, but I’m guessing Urander would likely not recommend it.

Urander has pretty detailed assembly instructions (see this link, it’ll give you a very clear idea of what’s involved both to assemble, and potentially remove).

I was actually considering making a pulley system in my garage so that I could remove the rack and overland tent when in off season. But it looks so good with it on, I’m likely not going to.

I literally used the purchase of this rack to push my SC for an expedited lightbar installation. They were awesome and installed it the very same week my rack arrived. It worked out great. Just hope that you have an understanding service center like I did!

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Does the OEM light bar have to be installed by a SC?

Yes, definitely a SC installed option only. They actually glue it to the top of the windshield, and then make the initial power connection under the facia. For liability reasons (as not for road use), the owner is supposed to then make the final electrical connection to actually be able to operate it. You just remove the B pillar facia and make the final connection there via wire connectors. It’s as easy as just popping off the bolt cover, remove the one 10mm bolt under it, pull the facia back out of the way, and connect the wire plugs. Then reassemble. Literally like 3-4 minutes.

Thanks. I'm also thinking about an overhead lift to pull the rack, tent, and solar panel from the truck when not need. I agree, though, that the rack makes the truck look great.
