Just finished wrapping my Cybertruck in PPF! ?? It was a challenging but rewarding project. Took 2 days from start to finish.

Would you recommend doing it yourself? - Absolutely as long as you have patience and 2 car garage :). I worked at my relative's place.

What was the most difficult part - Not really. Just need right tools to loosen up the mirrors and socket wrench. You can get away from removing fenders if you dont want to.

Anyone else tried DIY wraps? Would love to hear your experiences!

Special thanks to @panthar for motivation and suggesting what to do.

Bought wrap from @CybertruckWraps , you can ask them if any questions on wrap.

This motivates me to save $5k and DIY. Questions:

  1. You bought a gallon of TAC, was it enough?
  2. Are the edges peeling back any at all?
  3. Does the wet solution leave stains/sticky spots on the garage floor?
  4. Would you do it again just to change the color?

You will probably save more given basic wraps cost 6k. Color change ones are about 8-10k.

Answers:

—————-
Was not sure either but since I didn’t use TAC for sliding squeegee, I still have 40% left. I made my own soap water solution for squeegee sliding.

Are the edges peeling back any at all?
—————-
Some places it did (less than 5%) but with all fairness it’s not ppf fault. I didn’t push it well. I was in time crunch as I wrapped at a relative place. Make sure to clean edges with isopropyl alcohol beforehand.
I did use heat gun and fixed them in next few days as I saw them.

Does the wet solution leave stains/sticky spots on the garage floor?
—————-
No, we did use towels where we were spraying and then cleaned right after.

Would you do it again just to change the color?
—————-
I would vs I should is a question. I have a good thought on which color ppf I want and probably won’t change it unless there are issues. I got fine balance between black and color change ones with the wrap I chose. You can go wrong with black, there are many ppl apply black for a reason. Whatever you chose, checkout fb or YouTube and picture how it will look on cybertruck.

I'm not currently planning to wrap my truck, but if I do, I'm definitely going to do it myself.

Watching real-world examples like yours is why. Thanks for posting, Itsamti!

Reminds me a little of the Obsidian Black color and the speckles in it which Tesla offered on the Model 3 for a few months after launch, but better. The color flakes also are similar to the ones in the blend for Tesla's Midnight Silver paint as well. I'm sure it looks very unique under the right angles of sun or street lights. Nice. Has kind of an "astronomy" vibe to it.

Thank you for all the answers.

This question about whether you would do it again for different color was not about the color itself. I am more asking if you would go through the effort of this process again for something as trivial as a different color you liked?

I understand there a lot of benefits of wrapping and that might motivate someone to do it the first time, but these wraps have a lifespan and at some point it needs to be redone.

Makes sense. 2 days work to save 5 k is worthwhile for me.
I would redo it if it goes about 5 year. Don’t see worth the hassle if it’s any less than that. That’s why didn’t do vinyl and went with ppf. The one I got has 8 yr warranty.

Thanks @itsamtifor the detailed wrap-up - just one more question. Do you think that some prior experience or practice needed t do the wrap or can attempt without just by watching video and following instructions ? Thanks

Didn’t had prior experience wrapping, however went thru several videos and took my time. Key is to go slow and surface prep-

1. Wash car with dish soap and use clay bar. I didn’t use car wash liquid as they may have wax and ppf won’t stick.
2. Any panel you are working- clean with isopropyl alcohol (panel and edges).
3. Spray tac solution and use silicone squeeze to wipe.
4. Put ppf and adjust where you want to install.
5. Tuck ppf using magnets
6. Peel ppf backing about 20-30%
7. Spray tac on panel and ppf.
8. Place ppf, spray slip solution and then start squeezing. Don’t squeeze too hard, tac will go way if a little left.
9. Slowly remove backing and use tac on panel and ppf
10. Wait for 1 hr (do other panel)
11. Come back and cut excess ppt, leave enough to roll the edges.
12. Heat ppf edges and start rolling. (Check out few videos to do it right)

You will need various tools depending on which part you are rolling the edges.

I did get few small bubbles which I took care next day or two.
