Gearbox whining, chirping sound?

I took the truck in for its scheduled service appointment and the service supervisor drove around with me and noticed the noise. He said he was unfamiliar with it.

In the end, he made a recording of the sound and was passing it onto Tesla engineers because he could not precisely identify it.

Up to that point I was being told that it was a normal sound. I said if it’s a normal sound, then they should be able to identify it. If they can’t identify it, then it needs to be fixed.

I will update with what they get back to me with.

Hi all - anyone who had this issue heard any updates from their local Tesla service center or engineering? I am having the same issue (Located in Orlando, FL) and the local center did audio testing with a special recording device and sent it to engineering in TX who then said this was normal. I believe they were listening to the wrong noise as their is a high-pitch noise around 30 MPH of the motor which is not the same noise here.

Wondering what we can do to help guide the service center team to find a resolution on this?

I'm also wondering if we do a test of turning off the front motor and only using the rear motor (This can be done by a service tech), if the issue would still be there.. has anyone tried this to see if it's a specific motor?

This is not an answer from an engineer, this sounds like an answer from someone that doesn’t want to talk about it and hopes we will just drop it.
In my opinion, an engineer would’ve given me the specifics of what’s causing the noise not some general BS.

The only good that came out of the conversation was the fact that they are getting a lot of complaints about this noise. The more of us that complain that the noise is not acceptable, whether it’s ”functioning as designed” or not, the more likely they are to try to find a solution for the problem.

That's why I always used to complain about the sounds that came out of the exhaust pipe on my previous ICE vehicles. They always said it was "functioning as designed" but I'm not stupid enough to take that for an answer! And it looks like it worked, every brand of car I used to own has now come out with an electric version!

I am pushing my local Orlando service center to do a motor replacement. The noise is absolutely driving me insane. It’s mainly around the 50-60 MPH range and it’s just so ridiculously annoying I can’t stand it.

they said they submitted the case to engineering and they need to approve it. I was already approved by legal for a buy back, but I have already fully wrapped my truck in PPF and I would rather just have a brand new motor replaced and call it a day.

I’ll report back with any updates. Please if anyone else hears something, please share!

my service center took an audio clip of the noise and have to submit it to Tesla engineering to approve the motor swap. It’s taking an extremely long time (it’s already been over 3 weeks) and I’m hoping I hear back soon otherwise I’ll stop in again.

I’ve driven teslas for 6+ years and am accustom to the motor sounds, but there is something different here. We initially called it our gearbox cricket and hoped it would decrease as we put more miles on the truck. 2000+ miles later and the noise is still present. It is only audible when the drivetrain is under load, acceleration or regen.
I wanted to see if anyone else here is experiencing anything similar?

My first Tesla was a very early model S Vin number in the 6000s. We purchased it used from Tesla with under 40,000 miles and it had several warranty issues that were not taken care of before the previous owner turned it in.
I didn’t understand at the time why somebody wouldn’t get the warranty work done but now I think I do. I’m not really excited about taking the truck in for service until the service centers have had more experience working on the trucks and also availability of parts. My model S was in the shop for three months after we bought it to clear up all the warranty issues. I’m not about to do that with the truck right before summer. This is why I have not scheduled the service visit yet.

Well, I didn't know I was deaf but apparently am. Can someone tell me the exact second the sound in question comes? I've listened to this a half dozen times already and can't figure out what sound is in question.

This is from my CT. The SC tech did 2 test rides and told me this was normal noise from the inverter.

If it’s a normal sound of the inverter, I’m curious at why it is so pronounced on the Cybertruck and not audible on any other Tesla I’ve driven?

Additionally, if it is a normal sound than it seems that they should be able to make it quite like it is on other Tesla’s.
