Tesla Cybertruck From Superchargers to Sand Dunes: Tesla Cybertruck’s 200-Mile Overlanding Trip Across the Mojave Desert DSC09956-Edit

We recently embarked on an epic overlanding journey across the Mojave Desert in the Tesla Cybertruck to test if it’s truly built for the rugged outdoors. The trip covered nearly 200 miles, starting at a Tesla Supercharger in Needles, CA, and finishing in Baker, CA.

The trail offered a diverse range of terrains, rated a 5/10 on OnX. According to the description, it includes “uneven, rutted dirt trails with loose rocks, sand, erosion, and washes. Potential water crossings up to 18 inches deep, mud holes, and obstacles up to 2 feet, including ledges and short, steep grades.” In reality, we encountered everything from rock climbing and dry lake beds to stretches of sand dunes. The trail also features an elevation change of roughly 7,000 feet as it winds in and out of the desert.

Adding to the challenge, temperatures stayed around 110°F throughout the day, forcing us to keep the AC running, which wasn’t ideal for maximizing vehicle efficiency.

Old Mohave Road, Awesome trail, thanks for sharing!

If you didn't add the 30 miles with the generator, would you have made it?

Love to share stories with folks with the same passion!

Tbh, it would have been a close call - we did ran into several dead end roads with locked gates and had to drove back to the main route to find anther way out. That's some miles wasted for sure. The last thing we want is to get stranded on a remote trail with no backup options.

In other words, with the range extender, this trip would be a breeze..

As battery technology continues to advance, we could see even higher-density range extenders providing more range in the next 5 years.

100% and glad we're in the same community! Next time you're down in SoCal hit us up and let's go hit some trails, and we'll do the same when headed up North next trip.

If by the time the existing battery pack gets tired, graphene batteries might reach manufacturing practicality, with a potential much larger capacity and faster charging and longer life, too. So, one replacement at 300-500 thousand miles, and then better than ever for another 500 thousand plus. If that happened, well over 500 mile range without a range extender, and charging speeds not THAT much longer than refilling a diesel with really big tanks.

EV's aren't there yet for everyone. But not that many more years before they will be good enough for nearly everyone (some extreme uses in severe environments or for heavy equipment, may never be that well suited; and while electric air taxis are doable, electric airliners would just be silly; but carbon neutral drop-in fuels can be synthesized, given a carbon neutral source of sufficient electrical energy).
