You guys are right. I remember Elon saying that though I thought the intent was to move all vehicles to 4680s eventually. I suppose I mis-remembered that. Thanks for the correction.
That's depending on cell availability. Factories will eventually spool down and need replacing. And faster factories need to be designed. That's what the 4680 is supposed to do.

But until then, it would be foolish not to make all the cars they can.

@Crissa , that was kind of what I was thinking. I mean, it'd be NICE to get MYs with 4680s but they CAN be made with the others. The CT cannot, as far as I know, be made with the 2170s. So, it makes sense to keep the 4680s for the CT and whatever else needs them to function. It may be that the CT is the only vehicle designed to only work with the 4680 packs.

Hopefully, Tesla will be able to ramp up 4680 production to the point where they can transition all the vehicles away from the 2170s because even if the power density is the same, there are a lot fewer parts in a 4680 pack than a 2170 pack.

Pack performance and reliability are my biggest concerns with the Cybertruck, so I can understand why the 4680s would be preferred.
The 2170's are the proven mature technology, not the 4680's.

That said, we bought two of the first EV to use 2170's, as soon as we could get them, back in 2018 and they have been performing flawlessly. We didn't worry they wouldn't work well because they had a great warranty. There is always a risk being an early adopter but Tesla seems to manage warranty risk better than most car makers, so I don't see a lot of downside risk to jumping in early. Still, I would take the 2170's before the 4680's, if I actually had a choice.

People put too much emphasis on what battery a car has. I can see distinguishing between lithum-ion and iron-phosphate and having a strong preference for one or the other, but not so much with 2170 vs. 4680. My preference for 2170's, at this point in time, is very weak. I'm gonna be happy with either.

Corporate customers? The rental fleets are paying full price for Teslas. Well, for anything good roght now. They're not buying the frilly cars, tho.

My friend is in the queue for another Bronco after his first got bricked and now he's being offered $10k to give his truck to Hertz or something and get back in line...

Uhh... two flat tires, one which took a week to replace, two different trees fell on it one damaging the hood, the other the window (minor but annoying damage), and the electronics started failing and locked up and couldn't reboot and then got bricked and it had to be flatbedded away.

I can't believe he jumped back in line, but they talked him into it. He's a sucker for a good discount.

Did Rivian buy back the remains for a relatively low price and insurance covered the rest?
