Custom CA plates strategizing

I plan on getting custom plates for the truck. It takes 4-6 months according to dmv and you can only request once your regular plates arrive. So if I get foundation in March we are probably looking at the end of the year.... So I was thinking if it's possible to get it sooner... I could get them for my current truck and then transfer, but the only problem is that I plan to trade it in for CT and if I understand correctly that may screw up process of getting the custom plates depending on what stage they are in. Anyone has experience doing this? Am I overthinking?

I just received plates I ordered for my 2022 dodge TRX from January it actually is taking from 8 - 12 months to receive.

My suggestion is if you have another car that does not have personalized plates order the plates to that vehicle then when you get them assigne the plates to car through AAA when cyber truck comes in switch again .

I bought Ohio plates for my ridgeline which I will sell when I get the cybertruck and use these plates on the new truck! I bought them early to insure I could get CYBR TRK lettering!

I ordered my CA personalized plates a week or two after the unveiling in 2019 and have had them "parked" on a Honda van for a few years...I'm going to be retiring the van soon....

Pre-covid you could order without assigning to a vehicle and then pick up at the local DMV office. Now on their website when you place an order for a plate, they ask for the license number of the vehicle that the plate is going to be assigned to...

What would be interesting to know is if you ordered the personalized plate now for your current truck, what would happen if you traded it in before the plate arrived. Would you still be the owner of the plate and then could assign it to your Cybertruck? Or would they send it to whoever got the truck from Tesla? I think maybe you should wait until you get your Cybertruck plate then start the process just to be on the safe side. I’m reassigning the personalized plate off my bass boat trailer to my Cybertruck. It’s SETNHKS.

I ordered personal plates in California and they sent them to me without requiring turning in the previous plates. You can do this close to your delivery and just hold on to them when your hand over the trade in with the old plates or take the old plates off.
