Do people do this at a Mercedes or Porsche dealership? We started noticing these a few years ago at some of our Tesla Owners Club delivery events at our local Tesla store. People showed up with pages of checklist items and invariably they found "something" on the list they didn't like. As I recall that items was pretty mundane but the new owner raised a fuss and suddenly wasn't happy or thrilled to be buying a Tesla anymore.

If there is a list of 300-500 items surely something will be different from the list and the new owner starts thinking they are buying crap when in reality if you took a list of 300-500 items to Porsche or Mercedes etc. you are going to find something wrong with those cars as well.

I don't mean to suggest that new owners should blindly accept whatever Tesla throws at them, but I think the lists I've seen including this one aren't productive and end up having a negative effect on the brand and the new ownership experience. For example, if the list simply says check this panel for defects or misalignment, what does that mean? Is 1mm off misalignment? 2mm? Defects means what exactly? In metallic paints it is not unusually to have spots where reflectivity is different across the panel. Is that a defect? Sadly, while the list might be comprehensive in terms of things to look at, it really doesn't show you what to look for or explain anything in detail.

My suggestion is instead go through the list with an existing Tesla owner first and ask them which of the items on the list are really important or must-haves, and which are items not to worry about unless the problem is truly egregious. Then go do a delivery with the owner, or better yet, see if the local Tesla Owners Club is helping out at a delivery event and go then and ask questions.

I understand if Cyberlistguy is trying to start a business selling lists of things to check and maybe he compiled it from lots of existing Tesla delivery checklists and did some work for people who like lists, but if you want an enjoyable delivery experience, take an owner with you, not a list, or borrow an owner from the local Tesla Owners Club. You will be a lot happier IMHO.

Please note this post is simply my opinion having spent 6 years now conducting TOC delivery events and assistance with Tesla and speaking to hundreds of new owners from all over a multi-state region that our local store services. YMMV!

TeslaKen - funny enough - I completely agree with your post.

I bought an original model 3 and inspected it like any other car. Found basically nothing wrong - and it's still going strong.
Since then, I've joined a handful of friends and family to pick up their Teslas and have found a couple things at each visit. No need for a list, just familiar with the cars. Saved everybody some time and agitation.

I put this list together for myself while I was waiting for delivery back in February. I had read stories of things being off or wrong and this was the very early days of production. I figured I didn't quite know what to look for as I hadn't even seen one in the wild before. And, like for many others, this wasn't a small purchase and I wanted it to be as right as it could be.

I dig the comment, but posting this list isn't an attempt to start a business. If it were, I'd be living on the street! Instead, it's for (A) type-A folks that want to really get into the delivery and (B) folks that might not have access to somebody to join them to point out things like you or I might.

Anyhow - I think your post is right on and very reasonable. If my list helps somebody - or is simply an amusement - great! If not, cool by me.

Glad you didn't take offense as I didn't mean any, I've just seen list like these really sour the new owner Tesla experience, sometimes unnecessarily and I think that is a shame when that happens.

You should not go through this list when picking up the vehicle. When picking up the vehicle you need to make a simple decision "Are you picking up the vehicle or not".

You can then get home and detail the vehicle to death and just create a Service Request with any noted items.

Even if you find something during pickup, odds are that you will have to being it back for repair at a later time.

Like I said, when picking up, "is the vehicle so bad that you are going to reject it" is what you are looking for.

If you would reject the vehicle for a slight mark to the driver's visor, then sure, go through the list. When you reject a vehicle, you won't be driving home with it or any new car and it may be weeks before you get a new one. And if you reject too many vehicles, Tesla will decide not to do business with you.

This is a good and well organized delivery day list.

not everyone’s experience has been great with Tesla, and this will help those who are not sure what to look for identify quality control issues with their trucks before dropping that final pretty penny into Tesla’s hands...

Just do a quick walk and crawl around.. should be simple.. if something looks odd or “damaged” simply point it out and they will make note.

only thing I missed because I didn’t pay attention in the second row is this scuff on the b-pillar trim at the door opening.

Thankfully you have 3-days or 100mi after you drive off the lot to point these issues out…
