Sounds like I hit a nerve unintentionally. There is no value judgement in that statement. I just feel like that is a very predictable result.
When you are designing a strategy to correct world economics,, you’re going to make choices that minimize how much you hurt the party you ultimately want to come out on top. Intentionally or not. I don’t think it’s any secret who that party is at this point.
For one thing nobody else has a seat at the table like Tesla does because of the relationship between Elon and the current administration. For another, nobody else has had enough foresight to know how this was going to play out the way Elon has and that has allowed him to prepare and be smart.
European cars at Giga Berlin, Chinese cars at Giga Shanghai and various other moves that have positioned Tesla to be hurt much less by all this than pretty much any other auto manufacturer.
The above chart just confirms what I think everyone already knew would happen.

But might fail to pop when new car prices skyrocket and results in used car demand increase.

Happened with the Covid and chip shortage.

Gone are the days of used Model Y going for $100k, but might return if we keep the course!

China just imposed large retaliatory tariffs on US imports. This will directly affect the Model S and Model X in China, since those models are imported from the US, as per post #7 above. The prices of those models will presumably now go up in China, and presumably sales will go down. However, the Model S and Model X weren't big sellers in China anyway, so the impact to Tesla should be small.

Tesla has now stopped selling the Model S and Model X in China. The S/X are only made in the US at the Fremont factory. High Chinese tariffs on US imports have now made those models unaffordable in the Chinese market.

As noted previously, this change will not have a major impact on Tesla, because S/X sales in China were relatively low anyway. China buys lots of Model 3/Y (in fact, China was Tesla's biggest market in 2024), but those are made in China at the Shanghai factory, so no tariff impacts. In theory, Tesla could avoid the Chinese tariffs by retooling the Shanghai factory for S/X production, but the S/X probably aren't popular enough to make the investment worthwhile.

The Cybertruck is only made in the US at the Texas factory, so it would face the same high Chinese tariffs as the S/X. We can safely assume that the Cybertruck won't be sold in China either, unless the tariff situation changes.
