Another way forward? What happens if we separate the brains (and eyes) from the vehicle?

These guys are not the first to try this approach and I suspect that someone will do this sooner or later successfully. What do you guys think?

=================================

The startup is working on fully driverless systems, but it also sees an untapped market in licensing supervised self-driving technology.

I tried a demo of an ADAS system powered by Wayve's AV2.0 AI driver in San Francisco, taking a nearly hourlong ride inside a Ford Mustang Mach-E. The car was retrofitted with five cameras, a radar, and Wayve's AI driver.

Two Wayve spokespeople joined me for the ride to answer questions I had about the technology, along with a "vehicle safety operator" who was behind the wheel in case he had to intervene during the ride.

In some ways, it reminded me of a Tesla robotaxi, a ride-hailing service that — in SF — operates with a safety monitor behind the wheel.

Wayve is for manufacturers. But if you are a consumer, and you want to add ADAS to your vehicle, you can buy comma.ai hardware now for $999, and run openpilot open-source software. As with current versions of FSD, it must be supervised.

Yeah, thanks, that’s who I meant when I said I know others have done this. I’m pretty sure comma was selling units and doing a fairly amazing job before we even had FSD beta (yeah I just checked- open pilot launched in 2016). I know that they’ve been doing this but the author of the peace makes an interesting comment about whether Wayve will undermine Tesla’s business strategy.

Tesla currently offers the best ADAS available in consumer vehicles. But other auto manufacturers are working on their own ADAS systems, and companies like Wayve or Mobileye are developing third-party systems that can be licensed to manufacturers.

If any car company can license a third-party ADAS that rivals Tesla's, then yes, it does seem like that could totally undermine Tesla's business strategy. Of course, that's a big "if" at this time.

According to Elon, Tesla has discussed licensing FSD to other manufacturers. But apparently there have been no takers. This suggests that other manufacturers think that alternatives exist (or could exist in the future).
