Just wrapped up a 2-week, 9,000 km road trip from Toronto to Banff with my family — all in our Cybertruck! 🚀
We documented the entire journey in a vlog series, covering:
  • Long-distance driving with FSD (handled 95% of the drive!)
  • Camping in Banff with our North Face Wawona 8 tent ⛺
  • Destination charging strategy (since there are no Superchargers in Banff)
  • Epic stops along the way: Drumheller, Jasper via the Icefields Parkway, Radium Hot Springs, Golden Skybridge, and even two days of fun at West Edmonton Mall 🎢
  • Real-life Cybertruck moments: weather performance, tonneau cover in heavy rain, fan encounters, and even watching Netflix at a Supercharger stop 🍿
If you’ve been wondering how the Cybertruck holds up on a massive family adventure — this series has it all: the good, the challenges, and the unforgettable memories.

Here's the link to the playlist for the videos so far -

I’d love to start a discussion here:
  • Has anyone else done a long-distance road trip in their Cybertruck yet?
  • How do you handle charging strategy for family trips?
  • Would you trust FSD for a drive like this?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!

Awesome! 👏

I'm taking my 12-year-old son on a 9 day trip from San Antonio to the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon starting October 10th, camping nearly every night in a Roof Top Tent.

I have the charging stops planned out with 3 nights gaining a full charge on 50 amp at 2 RV parks and 1 State Park.

Looking forward to it!

Cool!

Yes, we did a 4 week 20,000 km trip in August with our two kids 9 & 11 from NB to Tuktoyaktuk and around Alaska.

Charging strategy: on the Superchargers just follow the truck. Everytime I have tried to second guess it I regret it. Son tries to get on the Beach Buggy high score board. Off network: man Plugshare app.

I couldn't use FSD because of my spare tire blocking the rear cam.

Very Cool! Always wanted to make it to Banff and Lake Louise Area. I’m doing about 5500 miles this December. FL to California round trip. I will be using FSD as much as I can!
Thanks! 🙌 You’re going to love Banff and Lake Louise when you make it out there — it honestly looks like something out of a painting. Sounds like you’ve got an epic trip coming up too! Florida to California round trip is no joke — 5,500 miles is a proper adventure.

We leaned on FSD a lot during our drive, and it made those long stretches so much easier — especially with kids in the back. I think you’ll really appreciate it on those endless highway runs. Just curious — for your stops, do you absolutely prefer hotels with chargers or fully rely on superchargers?

That sounds like an amazing adventure! 🙌 I’ve heard the skies full of balloons at sunrise is pure magic. And then Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce… that’s one legendary lineup for a 9-day trip.

Quick question — are you planning to use the CyberTent for camping? I’ve been eyeing the CyberTent for a while now and wondering how practical it feels on longer road trips. Would love to hear your take if you’ve tried it!

Oh my god, that’s a trip I would love to do someday. 👏 The truck itself is such a comfortable drive, but I’ve been completely spoiled by FSD — can’t imagine handling that kind of distance all on my own now. Huge kudos to you for pulling it off, and I’m sure your kids will remember this adventure for the rest of their lives.

I like your point about just trusting the Supercharger routing — every time I’ve tried to second guess it, I’ve regretted it too.

Quick question — once you were up in Alaska, how did you find the Supercharging network? Did you ever feel limited or stuck because of driving an EV out there, or was it smooth sailing with some planning?

I ended up with installing the Inspired Overland Carbonlite Rooftop Tent on the Mars Adventure Gear Full Expedition Rack. 🤗

If there is a way to reverse sorting where video 1 is the start and video 7 is the end, It seems to be backwards right now.

Good catch — thanks for pointing that out! 🙌 We just fixed it so the videos now play in the right order, starting from Day 1 through to the end, and we're not done with them yet. We’re still new to making and posting videos 😅 Appreciate you flagging it!

That setup looks really solid 👌 I just checked out a review of the Inspired Overland Carbonlite Rooftop Tent on YouTube — seems like a great choice. I imagine it might affect range a little with the added drag, but the quick setup after a long day of driving is a big plus. That’s honestly the main reason I haven’t pulled the trigger on the Cybertent yet… it takes time to set up, and that’s the last thing you want when you’re tired from the road.

The one nice thing about the Cybertent is that it stays tucked away under the tonneau cover, which I like for both security and aerodynamics.

Have you already tested your setup, or will this be the first big trip with it? What’s your opinion so far?

We did a 2,400-mile road trip with a 6,000-pound camper about a month ago. FSD is not an option - and not sure I'd use it even if it was. Yes - I love FSD any time I'm not towing.

We ended up charging mostly at Tesla Superchargers - one spot in the Redwoods of Northern California, we got to use our adaptor and charged at Electrify America. Using a 300 kWh charger only yielded 150 kWh of speed, though.

On our 14-day trip, we stayed two nights at full campgrounds so we could charge the car - but I am a bonehead and only brought an old mobile charger that I have from an old Tesla - guess what? It would not latch to the truck and was limited to 16-AMP charging even if plugged into a 50-AMP outlet. Even overnight charging didn't fill the battery :( Lesson learned? Make sure that the mobile charger you bring with you works!

Now, towing, we had to stop every 130 miles or so, which got a bit annoying even for our dog. 250-300 miles is longer than my bladder likes to hold it, regardless.

I didn't go with the Cybertent for the reason that it is so much work not only to set up and to put away. It's also a lot cheaper and lot less work to initially get installed. (Installing the rack + roof top tent was a lot of work to get installed just right).

But, I also installed a 270º OpenRoad awning which the rack is necessary for. This is going to be huge when we're out in the sun in those desert areas.

So far, there's minimal range loss with the rack and roof tent. There's a little bit of wind noise, but nothing over the top or whistling.

It wasn't my #1 tent. I really wanted the Pano by Urander but it wouldn't arrive in time for our trip because it had to literally be sent from China (3 weeks out). With that said, I am happy with the Inspired Overland Carbonlite. It's only 80 lbs, the mattress is very comfortable (air + foam hybrid), and setup/teardown takes 1 to 2 minutes.

I'm planning on doing a big writeup with photos here on the forum when our trip is finished. 😊

Man, that’s brave — and hats off to your patience stopping every 130 miles with a camper in tow. Respect. 🙌 I think the future will look a lot better once companies like Lightship and Pebble really prove themselves, but we just don’t have many practical, long-term reviews yet.

As for FSD while towing — feels pretty far-fetched right now. Until then, it’s a bit of a manual grind which is more than tolerable with a Cybertruck, I would say.

That makes a lot of sense 👌 The Cybertent does look cool, but I agree — after a long day of driving, the last thing you want is a 15–20 min setup/teardown. One to two minutes sounds like a dream compared to that.

Glad to hear range loss and wind noise have been minimal with your setup — that’s always the biggest concern with rooftop gear.

Really looking forward to your big writeup with photos once you’re back. I think a lot of us here (me included 😅) are trying to balance between the convenience of rooftop tents and the “integrated” cool factor of the Cybertent. Your hands-on notes will be super helpful.
