The hubless Verge motorcycle is going to sell for reverse engineering purposes only.

I can’t wait for the tear down results. This is either going to be the battery cell breakthrough that the world has been waiting for or there is a huge catch to the almost unbelievable claims.

If they do have a breakthrough, I hope the funding materialises.
A small company with poor financials but revolutionary technology isn't going to get "funding", it's going to be swallowed whole. If the tech is authentic, this could be an opportunity for Tesla to acquire.

But, I remain skeptical about the tech. Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence.

What about a sand-based battery...?

There’s a reason that Elon/Tesla went with the 18650 battery for the MS and MX models, a battery that was developed by Panasonic in 1995 and is still being installed in many new cars today, including the current MS & MX. The density has increased, but not dramatically, and yet it remains current, now more than 30 years after its intro. It is still the same cell used in Makita drills.

Elon once replied that none of the new-concept battery tech was worth exploring - that he needed to stay with tried-and-true existing tech for mass market vehicles. He scoffed at all the new tech being promoted as the next big thing in batteries - and IIRC this was over ten years ago. Then he violated his own advice with the big “battery day” event, introducing the 4860, but before development and proof of concept - and it didn't work as hoped or touted - it did not increase density, charging speed, or reduce manufacturing cost, the three key goals. It was intended for the CT initially, with roll into the M3/MY platform in an integrated, cast structural battery system. That has now been abandoned, and the CT is the only use of the battery that was supposed to become Tesla’s future. Tesla recently cancelled its supply contract with LG for the 4860 components, resulting in a multi-billion write-off, so there are now serious question as to the ramifications for long term CT production.

Don’t believe any battery hype until you see it in actual volume production.

I think the bigger question is whether there will actually materialise a bike to tear down. That would already be a development.

I hope there will be, but there are many reasons to remain concerned.

Once a true battery cell breakthrough occurs that‘s scalable and affordable all current cells are going to become obsolete. It’s going to change virtually everything the way we know it.

Imagine a future where your BEV gets 400 - 600 miles of “real world“ range, a cell phone stays charged for days, cordless tools run for hours and hours before needing to be recharged, drones stay in the air much longer, BEV aircraft are now practical, your electric bike will go 100+ miles on a charge, battery storage cells that last much longer to assist the existing power grid, etc.

Then again, we've been fooled before. Remember Trevor Milton and "Nikola"?
You are admitting that Nikola fooled you? It was such an obvious scam from the start. I mean, previous to Nikola, Trevor Milton was a small-time driveway contractor, if I recall. Nothing he said made sense, especially the hydrogen infrastructure he touted Nikola would be installing. More red flags than you could shake a stick at. Yet people still thought it was a real possibility.

Watching the engineer from Munro interview the CEO of Verge Motorcycles (apparently the brother of the CEO of Donut Labs) made it clear to me that this is BS. The way he dodged questions was hard to explain any other way. And while Jordan from Munro remained professional and resisted voicing his personal doubts, it was apparent to me that he had some very serious ones. However, without any data to prove his doubts, he remained professional and kept his personal suspicions from being revealed verbally.

Quite the charade and I'm surprised any rational and informed person is holding out hope that these batteries are on the cusp of changing the world. Apparently they didn't even bring any live cells with them, which is odd considering how safe and inexpensive they supposedly are! The vibe is totally wrong for the kind of breakthrough they claim to be representing too.

Funding grab feeling coming in the air tonight. Que drum solo.

It took Edison 2,774 attempts to arrive at the bamboo filament that made Edison's lightbulb a commercial success. Did Donut just discover the solid state bamboo equivalent?

The Donut Labs announcement sounds almost too good to be true: 400 Wh/kg, a full charge in five minutes and virtually no degradation. It would be amazing if those claims hold up, but I’m keeping my expectations in check since we’ve seen lots of battery hype before, and Donut is still a very small player. If Verge actually ships a bike with that kind of range and charge time, I’ll be first in line to celebrate. Until then, I’m in ‘wait and see’ mode. What do you all think—could this be a real breakthrough, or just clever marketing? And aside from solid‑state, what battery advances are you most excited about right now?

Is that a serious question? There is nothing real about this.

It could be real, or it could be a very odd and poorly conceived "marketing campaign" which will be exposed fairly quickly, as soon as they ship a bike with the claimed battery and it gets dissected. I doubt any serious investors or companies would invest money in Donut without seeing proof of the claims.

The fact is that most of the claimed parameters have been achieved by other chemistries, just not all put together in one cell.

As for other advances, as mentioned up thread, Amprius is interesting, (not solid state).

Another Ziroth video on Donut Labs, mostly covering what has already been discussed but also with some new input from other sources. He remains skeptical, but contrary to the thumbnail no truth is revealed.

Like many others I am waiting with baited breath for the tear down results. It‘s probably going to be one of the major news stories for all of 2026. Being the first to report on the reverse engineering findings will be a major news scoop.
