There may be other reasons, but one theory I have is to not allow charging from itself. I know I would have tried it just to see what happens.

Yea, I believe that. But there has to be a better way to detect that. Sleeping in the truck would be much better if you could do both

Unfortunately, it was only preconditioned for 20min. We don’t yet know how much power the CT motors can put into heating the battery pack but it very likely isn’t near enough to heat the pack from 70 F to above 100 F in that time.

I think we can conclude two things from this charging session:

1) Tesla has set a conservative charging curve for the CT now. (They will likely increase it with more fleet data.)

2) This session does not represent an optimal charging profile since the battery wasn’t fully preconditioned.

Well, if we all just pretend it's 2017 and we're charging on Urban Superchargers, then these speeds sound amazing!

Serious Towing is officially DOA unless this improves drastically (which I'm sure it will...when is the question? 6 months? or 4 years?)

* Slow Charging Curve
* Bad efficiency (compared to cars but we knew that)
* LOW Range (compared to 500+)
* Amazingly low % of Pull Thru Stalls even with 4+ year head start to get it built out

All equals a LOT more time than we're used to charging.

Still an amazing machine and can't wait to get mine...but yikes on towing!

They will play it safe for quite a while as they build more confidence in charge curves. The 4680s have been in development for a few years, but they need a fleet of data in the real world before feeling comfortable enough to play with the curve.

This has been a thing with all new platforms.

Not really buying that excuse as they have had 4680 in TMYs for a while and certainly have a ton of data on charging them. I would have expected better especially with Tesla knowing how the CT would be compared the existing EV trucks out there (Rivian, F150 lightning)

Been waiting 4 years, gonna wait another 4 months+ if I want to or not given current production times.
REALY hope some of this early low range and bad charging is fixable via software pushes from Tesla.

Maybe not ideal conditions, but I think we can agree:
1. 20+ min precondition is pretty good
2. 70f is a pretty good temperature
3. An hour to go from 15-90% battery is pretty terrible

I can't imagine Tesla not having knocked off the rough edges during 4 years or testing. I really hope these early versions for both range and charging are due to some kind of software bug that can be fixed over the air.

Yea but that 40 mins only gets you 120 miles or 2 hours of driving........
So charge for 40-50mins and drive for 2-2.5 hours
If you have a trailer cut that driving distance in half.

Why wouldn't it? If the cables are able to be smaller, that's because of less heat right? Less heat, less need to protect the battery from heat. I don't know how much of the slowdown is from that, but it has to be some amount.

The 250kw sc has a cable designed to support the current necessary. At 100*f and higher temps, the factor in limiting charge speed isn’t the supercharger being a v3/v4, it’s a cybertruck internal/software issue. The cybertruck charge curve falling off that aggressively should have nothing to do it the charger, and everything to do with the truck itself. Weather it’s cooling the batteries, or protecting them from damage due to C limitation, either way it’s not a great charge curve.

I'm sure completely reconfiguring the battery has something to do with the charging curve (not sure on the level though). I'm not disagreeing that it's not great. I just think there will be improvements both with V4 and software over time

How? Tesla uses 800v internally for cabling efficiency and a reduction in copper used, the split pack is for comparability with old 400v chargers and new 800v chargers. The only issue with charge speed from a 400v charger would be if the cybertruck could take more amps than the 400v charger could deliver, which it cannot.
