It's all about traier aerodynamic drag. That trailer could have been empty or overloaded and it would have been the same. Flat front enclosed trailers and RVs were horrible on even my diesel trucks range.
I've often wondered if someone where to make a "wing" to put in the bed that would redirect the airflow higher over the trailer reducing the air resistance if that would help. Looking at the OP's setup I bet it's not very good as the air flows over the truck and directly hits the flat face of the trailer.
I myself have noticed a significant increase in efficiency drafting an 18 Wheeler. I have not had a lot of chance to measure it in in my truck but on my model S it was 20-25% more efficient when drafting.
