To make FSD trustworthy, do we need an AI5 hardware version, or better cameras, or both? Does anyone use FSD on rural roads at night?

Alot to unpack here... Sorry for your great loss! CT problems pale. A loaner was nice but rental of a vehicle should be default response.. Why didn't you go? A weakness in the no-dealer model for Tesla is lack of parts department... Vertical integration should help JIT, but not if 10 or 20 %...

As Elon says, FSD for the CT is entirely a fringe case (1%). SBW interface with FSD is non trivial! Stay alert out there!!
