It is sounding like early Cybertrucks will not use 4680 batteries. The author in this article states early production is not dependent on 4680 batteries. I didn’t hear that in the Q3 Earnings Call. I heard Cybertruck is not cell constrained in 2023.

I am not sure I want a Cybertruck without 4680 cells. I think 4680 will charge faster and run cooler than the previous generation of cells.

Does anyone else have information on which cells will be in early Cybertrucks?

The Semi is being produced with the 2170's... it is a slow ramp and not seemingly desperate for 4680's.

Elon said the 4680 ramp is currently going well.

The Cathode plant is being built as we speak.

Production is 6 months away

I think it will be 4680's from day 1.

I don't think the production Cybertruck was ever or will ever be designed with 2170 cells.

They wanted to use 4680 cells in the Semi, this is true - but because they thought the 4680 would be in high supply. It was originally designed with 2170 cells.

And I think that's what tripping people up.

Are you tripping?:)
The Semi reveal was Nov 2017. I'm pretty sure those early prototypes were built with 2170 cells. That was way before Tesla told the world about 4680 batteries on battery day in Sept, 2020. But it does seem like they were anticipating being able to produce something like 4680 batteries with the specs. of the Semi & Roadster.

Semi was also before they bought Maxwell and the dry process they using in 4680.

I'm pretty sure semi was always 2170.

The only thing stopping them using 2170 on the CT is if they will make a 2170 structural pack. Until now it's not 100% clear if Tesla make a 2170 structural packs for the MY either. But technically it is possible to do so.

But I think given that MY from GA already have 4680 and 2170 coming off the line, then I'd assume CT would get priority for 4680 at the expensive of the MY, simply so they don't have to make a custom 2170 structual pack for the CT.

Note the MY packs are much smaller than the CT packs, so they aren't interchangeable, and MY had 2170 from the beginning and only switched to 4680 this year with some production from GA.

I'm in Mexico so get no government subsidies. In fact the U.S. federal & state subsidies increase U.S. demand which drives up the price for Tesla's in Mexico.

Regarding cell type, I will sacrifice and take a Cybertruck dual motor with CATL LFP cells in non-structual pack. No problem.

Oh and since you are going to do at least 8 more, please Tesla get a GigaFactory to us soon.
We have a lot of engineers & workers.

It strikes me that the difference here between ICE cars and EVs is stark. On an ice car they would charge you a premium for a better engine, or the gas station more for higher octane fuel.
I wonder what the objection is to charging more for better batteries, I don't think I've seen anybody do that.

Is it just the implication that there are 'Worse" batteries, and they are still nervous about public perception of them being dangerous?

Mexico galant is gonna be ?????

Seriously. I am in Arizona, I have been lucky to meet a ton of lucid production people - ALL Mexican except one European guy. They’ve all been picked off from Ford and brought to AZ to kick butt at lucid. I’ve been told some pretty neat stuff!

Cybertruck wise

It’ll be 4680. I’ve been told that numerous times and reassured but also told “you don’t even know why you want it Greg”. I’m not a chemist. I don’t know hack about batteries.

I wonder how long after deliveries start will there be international deliveries

An idiot sites a factory in TX then proceeds to ignore resources, talent and capacity nextdoor. México do automotive assembly, fabrication and engineering at the OEM level. Its not their first rodeo. Mexicans built two of my finest cars a ‘97 Tahoe and ‘12 Sportswagon. Wish they’d built the ’91 Rover and ‘85 Bronco.

Cybertruck wise… Wolverine Int’l CT variant should leverage GigaTX production expertise to ship worldwide including USA. Logistics are wonky but solved obstacle mfg in MX.

Looking forward Tesla Model “A”, the deuce, should be engineered, designed and fabricated exclusively for Mexico mfgr. Biden could upset that with subsidies but EM has stipulated that credits are not factored strategically at TSLA.

Pack performance and reliability are my biggest concerns with the Cybertruck, so I can understand why the 4680s would be preferred.
Why care? It’s a truck. It’s gonna work. It was designed for that. Bleeding edge early adopters understand they are Beta testers in exchange for being first. Minimize failure if reliability is paramount. That’s 2170.

Battery chemistry, technology and charging improvements are making decadal strides yearly. Performance? Sell the 2170’s and upgrade later rather than buy-in to 2019 technology now just coming to market. 4680 hasn’t really been road tested, shakedown cruised and subjected to the real world yet.
